Ukraine official: Rebels lay mines near crash site

DONETSK, Ukraine (AP) International observers turned back Wednesday after making another attempt to reach the site where Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 went down in eastern Ukraine, and a government official said the area near the zone had been mined by pro-Russian separatists who control it.
Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe set out in two vehicles without frustrated crash investigators from the Netherlands who have been trying to reach the site for four days.
The OSCE observers headed back to the city of Donetsk after discussions with rebels on the city's outskirts not long after starting what would have been a two-hour journey to the site.
That means that almost two weeks after the July 17 disaster, safety concerns and hindrance from the separatists who control the area are still obstructing access to the site. Foreign governments whose citizens died have complained the site is still not secured and some human remains have not been recovered. International observers say wreckage has been cut, moved or otherwise tampered with.

(3,596 posts)We need a multi-lateral military force to secure the area. We can use U.S. drones to kill any Russians or separatists that dare to stop the force from securing the area. The area will remain secured until the international investigators have completed their work.
I hate the use of military force but it appears these separatists (just like our teahadists) only understand one thing - brute force.
Can you imagine being one of the families who are still waiting for the remains of their loved one only to know it is likely laying somewhere in a field decomposing? The more decomposition the harder and longer time it takes to identify them.
Can you imagine being one of the families who want to know for sure who shot the airplane down and wants justice?

Next thing they'll sing together is, that it's the Ukranian 'fascists' who mined the area.
And many will fall for their lies.

(22,000 posts)The investigation is going to be near impossible if things continue to go on this way. It is a continual slap in the face to the families of the victims of the disaster. The problems is Russia is going to block anything and everything from being done to get the investigation done, even if that means vetoing things on the security council.

(35,300 posts)It's one thing to claim a town's been captured. Or that fighting continues. The current state of information is untenable.
We won't even ponder things like http://www.62.ua/news/587126, which says Strelkov, a couple of days ago, ordered his army not to use cuss words, "mat". No more language with words based on "fuck, cunt, whore, cock." There are hundreds of them--verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs. Conceivably you could go through your entire day using just mat, except for pronouns and prepositions. Soldiers? Being shot at? Not swear? Rabbit hole!
No, I mean reports of what's taken.
Ukr army says it's captured and repelled several counterattacks by rebels to retake a strategic elevation called Saur-Mogila. Strelkov says that it's firmly in rebel hands and they fought off Ukr attempts to take it.
Days ago Ukr forces entered Shakhtars'k. Claimed to have liberated it. That evening, Strelkov said the *rebels* liberated it.
Same for Torez. Avdeevka. Debal'tsovo. Ilovaisk. Is Snizhne under Ukr control, the scene of active fighting, or under rebel control?
Gorlovka is fully rebel, according to the rebels. Ukr forces claim to be on the outskirts (one of which is Avdeevka).
We're no longer talking about a village and time delay for reports. We're talking about a swath of cities and land. Which matters here, precisely here, because that's the area where the plane crashed. In the NE portion of the triangle defined by Debal'tsovo, Shakhtarsk, and Snizhne.
It might be that the two sides are fighting it out along the line from Shakhtarsk' to Snizhne. Reports are that rebels are building a fortified zone in Krasnyi Luch, which is E-SE of the crash site.
The folk in Donets'k, at this point, only have one source of news: Russian media and the DPR rebels. All Ukrainian media sources, in whichever language, are discontinued. So if you only see one side's reports, you could live in an entirely different informational universe.
The usual best places for this kind of news are local sites. Every berg has its own "city site". The Shakhtyorsk site I usually visit hasn't been updated since 7/27. My work computer (which is what I usually use for this) has some other sites blocked because so many sites in Russian or in Russia push malware. E. Ukraine and SW Russia is a notorious hotbed of commercial hacking and DDoS attacking. The Target hack from last fall originated pretty much from the Donbas (which isn't entirely in Ukraine) and adjacent areas.

It was (perhaps) so full of malware, it was shutting down un-expectedly and refusing to boot back up without shutting it down again.
So... buh-bye

(11,014 posts)after "armed rebels are removing bodies from crash site and sending them to Russia" when they were simply preserving the remains on refrigerated rail cars instead of letting them decompose. All remains arrived in Netherlands unmolested.
after "hooded and masked men are controlling the remains" when it is standard medical practice to wear masks and protective clothing to prevent foreign DNA and infections from contaminating the remains.
Now this unsubstantiated and uncorroborated story.
What next? Rebels have switched contents of Rogaine and Nair bottles so bald people will be balder and hairy people will be hairier?

(2,060 posts)investigation by the Dutch to see whom they attach blame to. Neither the West nor Russia will be able to buy The Hague, so I will give their findings great interest. Up until then all is speculation and rallying around the selected adversaries.

(6,943 posts)Could you momentarily cease behaving like barbarians, and allow the duly-appointed investigators and technicians to AT LEAST recover the remains of the victims of the MH 17 mass murder, so that said remains can be returned to the grieving families?
