Israel Beefs Up Military By Mobilising 16,000 More Reservists

Source: Agence France-Presse

JERUSALEM, July 31 ― Israel mobilised 16,000 additional reservists, taking their total to 86,000, as military operations in the Gaza Strip continue, an army spokeswoman said today.

“The army has issued 16,000 additional mobilisation orders to allow troops on the ground to rest, which takes the total number of reservists to 86,000,” said the spokeswoman.

Israel’s security cabinet, which met for five hours yesterday, unanimously decided to pursue attacks against Hamas “terrorist targets” and other operations to destroy a network of tunnels used by the Islamist movement between Gaza and Israel, public radio said.

Another meeting of the cabinet, which comprises eight ministers, will be held today afternoon, the radio added.

Israel mobilised 16,000 additional reservists Thursday to bolster forces fighting in Gaza as Washington gave its ally the go-ahead to raid stocks of emergency US weapons stored on Israeli soil.

Since their goal seems to be the total elimination of Hamas, I don't see how they can do it without fully going in and staying there. From what I see on TV interviews of key Israeli people, things might be pointing that way. I just watched a top Israeli military spokesman being interviewed on CNN by Wolf Blitzer and he listed three possible eventual scenarios, one being the complete and permanent military re-occupation of Gaza, especially if the rockets don't stop. A previous story on CNN seemed to suggest that since Hamas now has the technology to build their own rockets in hidden factories and no longer has to import them, the rocket fire could go on indefinitely.
