Protesters take to streets again ahead of curfew in Ferguson

FERGUSON Mo. (Reuters) - Hundreds of demonstrators in Ferguson, Missouri, angry at the shooting death of a black teenager by a white police officer took to the streets in the rain on Saturday night, ahead of a planned curfew called for by the state's governor.
... The mood among hundreds of protesters on a main road in Ferguson that has been the scene of recent demonstrations was tense and defiant on Saturday night. Dozens of helmet-clad officers holding full-length shields took position near demonstrators in the rain.
... The store was looted by rioters on Friday night, and on Saturday night a line of officers stood guard in front of the business as demonstrators marched nearby.
... On Saturday, dozens of demonstrators sat down in an intersection in Seattle. In Oakland on Friday night, a crowd marched through the streets and one police officer was assaulted in the demonstration and two arrests were made, city officials said in a statement.

The curfew will run from midnight until 5 a.m. CDT (0500 to 1000 GMT) until further notice
I ran out of my 4 paragraph limit, but its worthwhile to note from the this article that Governor Nixon faced an angry crowd at a news conference Saturday afternoon.
I was just wondering what impact the rain might be having so I checked the news and this is what I found. Curfew starts in 10 minutes from this posting.

It's pouring down rain and there are some peaceful protesters standing together at one end of the street. Can't tell how many.
Ruh roh... just seen the police line up changing positions. Wonder if they are going to instigate a problem?

(10,597 posts)... "trust" the police when they estimated the number of protesters present, because they had the view blocked from the cameras. I heard numbers from "a few dozen" to "150". Trust, my ass, I don't trust any of them. I'm just thankful they didn't kill any of those people. They don't even want to kill any more people in Ferguson, because I think we know what would happen.

In announcing the curfew, Nixon said that though many protesters were making themselves heard peacefully, the state would not allow looters to endanger the community where 18-year-old Michael Brown was shot in a street.
I am committed to making sure the forces of peace and justice prevail, Nixon said during a press conference at a church that was interrupted repeatedly by people objecting to the curfew and demanding that the officer who shot Brown be charged with murder.
We must first have and maintain peace. This is a test. The eyes of the world are watching, Nixon said. We cannot allow the ill will of the few to undermine the good will of the many.

(10,597 posts)"Smoke and not teargas" being fired at a few dozen protesters. Police seem to be advancing. So many police, can't see protesters anymore. (Camera is behind police line, instead of up where they can actually see what's going on on the front line.) Stalemate, but I don't see any protesters.

(10,904 posts)Tear gas or smoke cannisters (there is no agreement on which it was) was used, and that, plus heavy rain, managed to disperse the crowd which was only 100 to 150 at the peak, per a couple of estimates. No looting of any kind all evening. Doesn't sound like any arrests or maybe one -- no agreement on that.
Edited 333a CDT: "the crowd was only 100 to 150 at the peak" -- oops, that was about how many stayed after midnight to defy the curfew. There were "hundreds" earlier in the evening. And police admitted to using both tear gas and smoke canisters.

RT update from ABC: Highway patrol captain: 7 arrests made during engagement with protesters in Ferguson; 1 civilian shot during unrest.

FERGUSON, Mo. (AP/ KMOV) -- Police said they fired multiple smoke canisters and at least one tear gas canister into a crowd of defiant protesters who gathered in Ferguson early Sunday as they responded to get to the scene of a reported shooting.
Captain Ron Johnson with the Missouri Highway Patrol said there was a shooting near the intersection of Canfield Drive and West Florissant. He said one protester shot another. The victim was listed in critical condition.
Johnson said seven people were arrested from the roof of the Red's BBQ restaurant on West Florissant.

(8,219 posts)from the sound of it, was that officer firing rubber bullets or live ammo?
Maybe it's not possible to tell. I hope he wasn't firing live ammo.
rollin74
(1,973 posts)it was live ammo being fired by someone
police say that a police car was shot at (presumably the patrol car in the video)
a person was hit by gunfire and critically wounded. it's unclear who fired the shots
that's all the information that I can find so far

(18,124 posts)is self defeating and I will never condone or excuse something like that. Yet murder of unarmed kids and young males/females is the same.

(39,215 posts)should have before. And you are absolutely correct - looting is self defeating. A non-violent protest must remain non-violent or it looses the moral high ground.
on edit: I think the social scientist(s) better get down to business and find out why this/these officially sanctioned murder(s), by state and local executioners and gun happy citizens of all stripes, is happening with more regularity. While I know racism is a key component/motivator, this society is extremely violence prone. Is it because of those sick, violent, bloody killing games these kids started playing in the late 80's-90's in video arcades and on PC's? Warcraft comes to mind immediately. Movies? Are gun happy psychopaths gunning down and beating innocent men and women of color and others taking away our surprise and indignation at these horrible incidents, thus the social inhibitors to restrain people are disappearing. Are psychiatric services that degraded that cops and psychopaths alike are slipping through the cracks to kill, again and again??
Something is wrong here and spectres of Rome falling into anarchy and chaos trouble my sleep.
Buffalo Springfield's song comes to mind. "for what it's worth'.

(487 posts)I want the truth to come out about the shooting but the looting pisses me off and I want those looters put in jail as well. I have worked hard in my past to help poor areas get certain types of retail, idiots like the looters make that task nearly impossible.

(51,550 posts)His move to release the Ferguson convenience store video over DOJ objection and without giving Highway Patrol a heads up shows it was a brazen move to undermine Highway Patrol Captain Ron Johnson. The Chief obviously only cared about defending Darren Wilson, he didn't give a shit about the affects on the community. In fact, he probably wanted the local rage he got. He was probably embarrassed by how much things had calmed down Thursday night after Captain Johnson took over. The Chief knew dam well Captain Johnson should have been the one to make the call regarding how the tape was released. Worse, it's ham-handed release may result in yet another death (a protester shot by police last night is in critical condition).
The Ferguson Police Chief should be fired.
