Witness: McDonnell struggled to rein in his wife

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Former Gov. Bob McDonnell struggled to rein in his wife's erratic behavior, causing turmoil throughout the executive staff and nearly prompting a mass resignation among workers in the governor's mansion, a defense witness testified Monday.

Other former McDonnell administration officials said the ex-governor never pressed them to help the onetime CEO of a nutritional supplements company who wanted state tobacco commission funding for universities to conduct research on his chief product, the anti-inflammatory Anatabloc.

After prosecutors presented nearly three weeks of testimony in the public corruption trial of McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, lawyers for the former Republican governor opened their defense with even more testimony that portrayed his wife badly, saying she lashed out when she didn't get her way.

The McDonnells are charged in a 14-count indictment with accepting more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from former Star Scientific Inc. CEO Jonnie Williams in exchange for promoting his company's products.upplements.

Amazing how the wingers are all "there is no war on women", "husbands should protect their wives", "the family is the cornerstone of America" blah blah blah until it becomes expedient for the good Xtian husband to throw the wife under the bus to save his own ass.

You would hear about this at least 4 hrs/day in every square inch of the country, plus on AFR.

If we do something drastic about hate radio, we have a good chance to make a comeback

"As prosecutors presented their case to the jury over the first three weeks of the trial, the likely defense strategy began to emerge: Shift the blame for almost all of the alleged wrongdoing on Maureen McDonnell, then claim that she can't be convicted of selling the influence of the governor's office because she was not a public official."

and they were supposedly broke but she shows up with a Rolex and they take a $36,000 trip to Cape Cod - he doesn't ask where it came from. His staff was worried about how it looked and disclosure but not Mr. Lawyer Man. Oh and she sold off her Star Scientific stock at the end of 2011 (I think) to avoid disclosing it then bought it back in January of the next year.

Rein in how? She's an adult, not a child. He shouldn't have to "rein" her in. Sounds like something that would be said in the 1950's.

This really should not be a surprise anymore by now.

Judy Lynn, another great post.
