WASHINGTON — Gov. Rick Perry, Republican of Texas, on Thursday raised the “very real possibility” that individuals affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria and other terrorist groups have already slipped across the border as he made the case that border security was a pressing national security issue.

While Mr. Perry said that there was “no clear evidence” recruits from terrorist organizations had entered the United States illegally, he pointed to the number of violent crimes committed in recent years by illegal immigrants.

“I think there is the obvious, great concern that — because of the condition of the border from the standpoint of not being secure and us not knowing who is penetrating across — that individuals from ISIS or other terrorist states could be,” he said during a speech at the Heritage Foundation.

The speech came after Mr. Perry pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of abusing his power on Tuesday after being indicted by a grand jury last Friday, making him the first Texas governor to face criminal charges in nearly a century. Perry has called the charges a farce and is contemplating a second run for the Republican presidential nomination. He is scheduled to appear in New Hampshire this weekend.

Why "as he made the case" instead of "as he attempted to make a case."

Why "pointed to the number of violent crimes" -- without saying what the number is or whether it's significant -- and follow Perry's non sequitur of using that as supporting evidence for terrorists entering the US illegally.

Why repeat Perry's absence-of-evidence argument without question?

Why write "a speech at the Heritage Foundation" without identifying Heritage as an ultra-right-wing organization.

This is journalistic stenography of the worst kind -- comparable to the Times reporting the fake plagiarism accusations again Rick Perlstein without question -- and I'm getting really tired of it.

There's basically no realistic way to completely 'secure' a border, which is exactly why Republicans demand it as a precursor to any sort of immigration reform. It's undoable. Drug runners routinely make it across the border, so sure, they could smuggle in terrorists, too.

As to violent crimes by illegals, are they proportional to violent crimes committed on a per capita basis by folks born here? Are there any statistics that show that people who actually cross the border to stay (not simply drug runners, who go back and forth) are committing crimes at a greater rate than native-born Americans? If anything, I'd think that they A) commit fewer crimes, since they can't afford to be caught and deported, and B) are more often the VICTIMS of crimes committed by American criminals, for the same reason - they can't afford to go to the police when victimized.
