Lennon killer denied parole for eighth time

Source: BBC

Authorities in New York have denied parole to the man who shot dead musician John Lennon in 1980 for the eighth time.

Mark Chapman was sentenced to 20 years to life in 1981 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder.

Chapman, now 59, shot Lennon four times outside a Manhattan apartment block.

The parole board said the murder of the famous British musician and former member of The Beatles "devastated a family and those who loved the victim".

I still remember the night that Lennon was murdered. I had the radio on, and vaguely heard the report through my sleep fog.

When it actually hit me, I sat upright and cried like I hadn't in 20 years.

Why are the peacemakers always targeted?

Chapman's crime is so infamous that he will never get out of prison. If either man did, I doubt they would be alive very long because someone one would taken upon themselves to get revenge.

A mentally ill person, is mentally ill regardless of who they assault.

For an average person, that a mentally ill person attacks, their attacker's incarcerations are more flexible.

For those victims who are wealthy or famous, the attackers are held to a much harsher prison sentences.

While I must admit I would not like this guy let out, I wonder why this standard of incarceration favors certain classes over others?

I was absolutely gutted when he killed John Lennon. The horror of it, and the senselessness of it, shook me to the core. I felt sorry for his family and friends, and for the whole world, who lost that beautiful mind, talent, and music.

However, Mark Chapman is clearly someone with a mental illness. He needs treatment, not terminal incarceration. We should be merciful. Surely, John Lennon would prefer it that way.

Just don't let him have another gun ...
