VP Joe Biden heading to Detroit for Labor Day

Source: Detroit Free Press

For the second time in three years, Vice President Joe Biden will be in Detroit for Labor Day.

Sources with knowledge of the planning for organized labor’s biggest annual event confirmed that Biden will speak after this year’s Labor Day parade in Detroit.

The parade and subsequent speeches are designed to celebrate the achievements of American workers. The first Labor Day celebration – designated as the first Monday in September – occurred in 1882 in New York City. It became an official national holiday in 1884.

In Detroit, it’s become as much of a celebratory gathering as a political one, especially for Democrats. It’s a gathering attended by presidents and presidential candidates over the years, as well as elected officials from governor and U.S. senators to locally elected council members.
