7 dead, 3 hurt in university shooting

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A gunman opened fire Monday at a Christian university in California, killing at least seven people, wounding three more and setting off an intense, chaotic manhunt that ended hours later with his capture at a shopping center, authorities said.

The gunfire erupted around midmorning at Oikos University. Heavily armed officers swarmed the school in a large industrial park near the Oakland airport and, for at least an hour, believed the gunman could still be inside.

Tashi Wangchuk, whose wife attended the school and witnessed the shooting, said he was told by police that the gunman first shot a woman at the front desk, then continued shooting randomly in classrooms.

Wangchuk said his wife, Dechen Wangzom, was in her vocational nursing class when she heard gunshots. She locked the door and turned off the lights, Wangchuk said he was told by his wife, who was still being questioned by police Monday afternoon.

Several people were shot and apparently some were killed when a gunman opened fire inside a classroom at an East Oakland private university, authorities said.

The shooting happened at Oikos University at 7850 Edgewater Road about 10:40 a.m. Four bodies outside the school were covered by tarps, and rescue workers removed at least four bodies on stretchers.

.....
Johnson said while she waited for medical attention the woman told her the shooter was a man in her nursing class who rose up and shot one person at point blank range in the chest before he started spraying the room with bullets.

"She said he looked crazy all the time," Johnson said the victim told her, "But they never knew how far he would go."

Violent crime rates include beatings by hand, with sticks, with knives, with machetes; rapes (with or without weapons); all kinds of stuff. Violent crime rates are tied more than anything to the size of the male population 16-24.

So showing this chart does not prove that "gun crimes" are at historically low levels.

According to its website, Oikos is an independent Korean school that offers undergraduate courses in biblical studies, ministry, nursing and music, among other degrees.

The school does not show up on the U.S. Department of Education's list of accredited schools.

But the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education has approved the school to teach seven degree-granting programs: bachelors degrees in biblical studies and music; masters in divinity, music and Asian medicine, a doctorate in ministry, and an associates degree in nursing.

Its website says the school trains men and women "for Christian leadership, both lay and clerical." It's not clear how many students attend the school, or the size of its faculty.

At least four dead in shooting at Christian university in East Oakland

OAKLAND -- Several people have been hurt -- and possibly four killed -- in a shooting this morning at a Christian university in East Oakland, authorities said.

Police would not confirm the total number of fatalites from the shooting at Oikos University on Edgewater Drive, but said that a suspect was in custody and had been arrested in Alameda.

People were being evacuated by armored vehicles from the building at 7850 Edgewater Drive, some taken away by ambulance. More are being triaged outside the building and Oakland's Highland Hospital reports that some victims are being treated there.

The shooting happened about 10:23 a.m. in a classroom at Oikos University, when the suspect came in and fired multiple shots.

<snip>

Pastor Jong Kim, who founded the school about 10 years ago, said he did not see the shooting but heard about 30 gunshots.

Gunman has been caught 2 dead 6 injured according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

2 dead, 6 injured, gunman caught in college shooting

A gunman opened fire inside a private university in Oakland, killing at least two people and injuring six, authorities said.

The shooting happened at Oikos University, a Christian school, at 7850 Edgewater Road about 10:33 a.m., said Oakland police spokeswoman Johnna Watson. Watson said authorities detained a suspect, but not would disclose if the suspect was a student.

Outside the building, tarps covered what appeared to be four bodies, and rescue workers removed at least four more victims on gurneys.

Highland Hospital reported that it was treating four victims from the shooting. Students continued evacuating the building more than an hour after the shooting.

Tue Apr 3, 2012, 10:32 AM
Apr 2012

1. Gun ownership rates have skyrocketed while total suicide rates have generally fallen with slight fluctuations due to the economy. Increased access to guns have not influenced suicide rates.

2. Japan, with the world's highest suicide rate, has some of the world's strictest gun laws. If someone wants to kill themselves, they will find a way.

Suicide is a mental health issue - the solution is single payer health care with a strong mental health component.

>>This rough-edged port city that struggles for a reprieve from the violence saw its homicide total hit triple digits last year for the fifth time in the past six years. There were 95 homicides in 2010, a five-year low that brought promise and some optimism.

But a number of the slayings in 2011 sparked community outrage and national attention. A man was shot in broad daylight in November near the Occupy Oakland encampment outside City Hall, and a beloved restaurant owner in East Oakland was fatally shot in April during an early morning attempted robbery.

Gabriel, known by his family as "Little Gabrielito," was one of three little boys felled by bullets. Three-year-old Carlos "Carlito" Nava was gunned down while being pushed in a stroller by his mother in August.

Last month, Hiram Lawrence was taken off life support after being shot in the head while in his father's arms during a rap video shooting; he died nearly three weeks shy of his second birthday.
