Texas GOP candidate Greg Abbott backs out of only televised debate against Wendy Davis

Source: Reuters

AUSTIN Texas (Reuters) – The frontrunner for the Texas race for governor, Republican Greg Abbott, has pulled out of the sole statewide televised debate, the debate’s broadcaster, WFAA-TV, said on Friday.

“Due to our inability to agree on specific details of the format, Attorney General Greg Abbott will regretfully not be participating in the WFAA debate,” Robert Black, a senior campaign adviser, was quoted as saying by WFAA on Friday.

The move comes as Abbott, the current attorney general, has seen once double-digit lead over his Democratic challenger, state Senator Wendy Davis, turn to single digits in polls among potential voters in the November election.

Republicans have won every statewide election in Texas since 1994, helping turn the state with a $1.4 trillion annual economy into an incubator for conservative policies that are often copied by other states.

7. He's back in, sort of.

AUSTIN, Texas -

After backing out of a statewide televised debate in the Texas governor's race, Republican Greg Abbott has reversed his position and has agreed to debate Democrat Wendy Davis.

But there's a change.

Abbot still won't participate on a roundtable-type discussion as proposed by WFAA-TV and The Texas Tribune. Instead, he took up the offer of KERA, NBC5/KXAS-TV, Telemundo 39 and The Dallas Morning News to participate in a debate with timed responses.

Abbott spokesman Matt Hirsch said Friday the campaign canceled the Sept. 30 debate at Dallas television station WFAA, which it had agreed to three months ago, because the format wouldn't have allowed for a "thoughtful" discussion of issues.

Coward. It was going to be too hard before so he threw a fit and either he's taking his ball home, or it's going to be played by his rules.

I know Davis isn't in a position to tell him to shove it, but I would. Which is why I'm not a politician and she is.

14. He's scared to his core of Democrats, so he might tuck tail and run again.

After all this is the man who called Battleground Texas, "more scary than North Korea."

In a different state he'd be called to the mat for his antics. Texas Republicans, well, to put it as nicely as I can, they're too stupid to even realize the people they're voting into office are laughing their butts off at how easily manipulated they are at every turn. I mean, they don't even make their candidates work for it there. The only time they pay the least bit of attention is in a primary race, after that even if it's a well documented fact that is brought up against the Republican candidate, they all just stick their fingers in their ears and start screaming "Evil Liberal lies!"

We could take the state if we could just get people down there voting, but that's about as easy as pulling teeth on a crocodile. Too many people think the "fix" is in no matter what they vote for, and as such just don't bother. It's a self fulfilling prophesy if ever there was one.

17. Well done analysis, herding cats! And, why wouldn't the Texas gop laugh

at how freaking easy it is to manipulate their hordes of sheep?!

Yeah, too bad about the "the fix is in" mindset in this day of close votes and how their vote can make a Big Difference.

21. If we could get people in Texas to vote it would be a different state.

Really. I'm not just saying that. Too many people there who support Democratic ideologies feel beat down and insignificant. There are a lot of Libertarians who don't bother to vote very often either, but they're not my concern. Heck, they're probably Tea Party members now and voting in line with the Republicans for all I know. It really wouldn't surprise me since most of them weren't the brightest crayons in the box.

Back in 2010 I worked the Gubernatorial election for White there. I can't tell you the number of people I talked to who told me they hadn't bothered to vote since Ann Richards lost. Which was 16 years before that! Don't get me started on the percentage of registered voters, either. I could go on all night!

The end line is the Democrats in Texas are some of the kindest and most devoted I've ever worked with anyplace. They've been underfunded and are trying to motivate a variation of apathetic and jaded people into becoming politically aware and active. Which is an uphill battle, but not an impossible one. All their major cities are predominantly Democratic now. That was a major turning point for Texas. It's the vast rural areas they currently have to register to vote and reach out to in the state. It's doable. Like eating any elephant, you do it one bite at a time. Eventually that beast is going to be down to a manageable size for you and your friends to conquer it.

Texas Democrats will always have a special place in my heart. They taught me about never giving up no matter what others say. Someday if you work extremely hard and believe, you'll win. Eventually.

24. Thank you for all that history, herding.. I just posted down thread about Bill White..

Following his mentor Rick Perry? As when he wouldn't debate Bill White for gov?

The real reason why Perry wouldn’t debate Bill White?

"Making his way through Bush Intercontinental earlier this week, former Houston Mayor Bill White says he was stopped by three different people who wanted to tell him the same thing: They now understand why Rick Perry wouldn’t debate him in last year’s race for governor.

White says it’s become typical commentary in conversations with people around town, ever since Texans got a look at the governor on the national stage, and especially at his fumbling, bumbling, “oops” moments on the debate stage."

With every tv and radio station in Texas bashing Davis all day every day, it would be stupid for this lying, hypocritical coward to face her.

Too bad he does not have other repugs running against him and their debate.
I always rejoice when their idiocy is exposed. "Ooops"

Good luck with Wendy, but even she would not make me move to Texas, besides my state has very tough races.
