15 detained in Australian counterterrorism raids / raids foil 'beheading plot'

Source: AFP Via The Guardian

Australian police detained 15 people on Thursday in a major counterterrorism operation, saying intelligence indicated a random, violent attack was being planned on Australian soil.

About 800 federal and state police officers raided more than two dozen properties across Sydney as part of the operation, the largest in Australian history, Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Andrew Colvin said. Separate raids in the eastern cities of Brisbane and Logan were also conducted.

One person was charged with serious terrorism-related offenses and was scheduled to appear in court later Thursday. Colvin declined to detail the exact nature of the charges.

The arrests come just days after the country raised its terror warning to the second-highest level in response to the domestic threat posed by supporters of the Islamic State group.

Counter-terrorism operation to stop "demonstration killings" in public by ISIL supporters ends in 15 detentions.

(Prime Minister) Abbott was asked about reports that the detainees were planning to behead a random person in Sydney.

"That's the intelligence we received," he told reporters. "The exhortations - quite direct exhortations - were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country."

Attorney General George Brandis confirmed that a person born in Afghanistan who had spent time in Australia and is now working with ISIL in the Middle East ordered supporters in Australia to behead people and videotape the killings.

"If the ... police had not acted today, there is a likelihood that this would have happened,'' Brandis told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

HORRIFIC details have emerged of a plot to behead an Australian and upload it to social media in a deliberate attack against the country.

While the claims remain unconfirmed, Channel Seven reports one the men charged in this morning’s raids in Sydney planned to kidnap a random Australian, execute them by beheading in a public place, possibly Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD, and film the act and post on social media.

Further reports have emerged terrorists planned to drape the victim in an Islamic State flag.

The man, charged for serious terrorism related offences, is due in a Sydney court later today.

Court documents tendered by authorities are expected to detail the man’s plan in full.

operation that doesn't involve drones and hellfire missiles? Conducted by police?! Whoever heard of such a thing? I thought terrorism was a purely military thing?
