'9/11 planners' to face US trials

Source: BBC

The US has formally sent to trial five suspected al-Qaeda militants believed to have planned the 9/11 terror attacks.

The five Guantanamo Bay inmates, including alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, will be tried by a military commission.

They will face charges including terrorism, hijacking, conspiracy, murder and destruction of property.

They could face the death penalty if found guilty, the Pentagon confirmed.

Lots of folks don't know that.

Kind of a catch 22 for the Obama administration ... fight with Congress to get them tried in US courts, thus increasing the delay, or try them in military court, and be called a fascist.

But ... this is the nature of many of the messy Bush left behind. Each is a giant pile of %$%#, and Obama is expected to clean it up, and also not touch the ^%##$ in the process.

US approves capital trial for 5 Guantanamo Bay prisoners charged in Sept. 11 attacks
By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, April 4, 11:21 AM

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. military says it’s ready to resume the trial of five Guantanamo Bay prisoners charged with planning and aiding the Sept. 11 attacks.

A Pentagon legal official has signed off on trying them together at the U.S. base in Cuba. That means the military has 30 days from Wednesday to arraign the prisoners on charges that include terrorism and murder. They could get the death penalty if convicted.

Defense lawyers were hoping two men would be tried separately on non-capital charges, arguing the pair are accused of relatively minor roles.

President Barack Obama halted the previous trial and wanted them prosecuted in civilian court. Congress opposed the move and the administration was forced to shift it back to Guantanamo.

Don't rush out and buy new batteries for that old tape recorder. I wouldn't count on there will being any oral history project interviews granted for these five. Ever.

"Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has alleged that he was repeatedly tortured during his detention in Cuba. CIA documents confirm that he was subjected to simulated drowning, known as waterboarding, 183 times."

"Alleged" my ass..waterboarding IS torture and Bush/Cheney and the CIA all admitted to it.

But that's the new reality, where our Constitution gets shit-canned whenever we feel like it. I would really like to see a government that trusts our system of laws back in place, and I don't give a happy rat's ass that the Bush administration did it, too. It was wrong for those criminals, it's criminally wrong for their successors, and makes them criminals, too.

More correctly, if only we had a president who cared in the least about constitutional limits on the power of government.

Why does anyone need camo to blend into the skyline in St Paul, MN? Are they expecting an urban war with invading cheese-seeking aliens?
