Lisa Murkowski: 'It Makes No Sense To Make This Attack On Women'
The Huffington Post | By Luke Johnson
Posted: 04/ 5/2012 5:25 pm Updated: 04/ 5/2012 5:25 pm

.................

"It makes no sense to make this attack on women," she said at a local Chamber of Commerce luncheon, according to the Homer News. "If you don't feel this is an attack, you need to go home and talk to your wife and your daughters."

She also said that she would continue to support funding for Planned Parenthood, adding that the courts have affirmed a legal right to an abortion and she stands by that.

Murkowski criticized GOP presidential candidates for not condemning Rush Limbaugh for calling Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute," which he later apologized for. Fluke was rejected as a witness before a panel on the Obama contraception mandate chaired by House Oversight And Government Reform Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) last February. (She spoke Thursday to HuffPost in a Q&A.)

"To have those kind of slurs against a woman … you had candidates who want to be our president not say, 'That's wrong. That's offensive.' They did not condemn the rhetoric," she said.

Lisa is a pro at talking out of both sides of her mouth, which is how she convinced so many good Democrats in Alaska to write her in in 2010. We would have been so much better off with Scott McAdams who makes his positions clear and sticks to them.

She received a lot of grief from her female constituents when she came back here after the Blunt amendment vote. Now she's trying to atone. Too little too late, Lisa.

Murkowski Regrets Voting For Blunt’s ‘Religious Conscience’ Measure: ‘I Have Let These Women Down’
By Igor Volsky posted from ThinkProgress Health on Mar 6, 2012 at 10:33 am

Alaska Republican Lisa Murkowski told a local newspaper yesterday that she regrets her vote for the so-called Blunt amendment, the GOP’s alternative to President Obama’s rule requiring employers to provide contraception coverage as part of their health care insurance plans. Under the amendment, which the Senate tabled with the help of just one Republican, employers would have been empowered to deny coverage of health services to their employees on the basis of personal moral objections.

“I have never had a vote I’ve taken where I have felt that I let down more people that believed in me,” Murkowski told the Anchorage Daily News’ Julia O’Malley, claiming that the amendment’s language went “overboard”:

“If you had it to do over again, having had the weekend that you had with women being upset about the vote, do you think you would have voted the same?” I asked.

“No,” she said.

I'd love to think she's having a crisis of conscience about which side she throws her allegience towards. How any non self-loathing woman can align herself with the rethugs is beyond my ability to undertand.

Thu Apr 5, 2012, 08:17 PM
Apr 2012

She not only admitted she was wrong, she is working actively to make amends. WTF more could you ask?

I'd vastly prefer over some politicians I could name who TALK liberal at first and then vote with the right-wing when it comes down to the backroom deal. And I could name a shitload of them and make a lot of people unhappy i.e. the Patriot Act is, was, and always will be inexcusably evil, MUCH worse than the Blunt amendment, and I don't know of ANYONE who voted for it who is seriously working to get it dismantled. It was written by fascists, implemented over a lie, it's profoundly corrupt, and it didn't and doesn't work.

If you want her to switch back to the other side, keep ragging on her for doing this. If you want her to get more sensible, compliment her when she's sensible and rag on her when she's wrong. Is it that much harder than ragging on someone because it's fun?

I am no fan of Murkowski's but she is trying to make amends for her stupid assed vote. The fact that she did it after getting a lot of grief for her blunt vote does illustrate that she has the capacity to listen. This is a quality that has been very rare in recent republican circles. I know that I will disagree with her much more often than I'll agree, but if and when the republican party ever decides to again embrace sanity, she may be what their new face looks like.

And if she's ever on a national ticket, as much of an improvement over sarah palin(comparison) she may be, I very much look forward to not voting for her.

PEACE!

I would suggest that you check her out more. This woman is on the 20 most corrupt members of congress for years and she votes this stuff all the time. She hasn't changed a hair. She is just trying to do damage control. When it comes time to do it again, she will. She didn't pick our side. She's working her own side as usual. She isn't making amends. She doesn't believe she is wrong. She is just trying to make fires go away. She will do it again.

She talks out of both sides of her mouth. You can NOT trust any Repuke to not vote with their party despite what they say or the remorse after the fact. Good for her for speaking up now. But I want to see her speaking up when it counts, and since she is a republican that will NEVER happen.
She is my senator and I call bullshit on her.
She will have to prove herself and that she can never do. She would be voted out of office in alaska.

and Tibbit and RogueValley are absolutely correct. Lisa is just doing damage control. She picked up a lot of Democrats and Independents in 2010 (because everyone was so freaked out by Joe Miller and too cowardly to vote for Scott McAdams) by promising to be independent, and foolishly people here believed her. Instead, she has voted almost 100% with Mitch McConnell. She's really good at voting with the party and then coming back later and saying that it was a tough decision or if she had it to do over again, she'd vote with the Democrats. I don't believe a word she says.

That many people can't even agree on a topping for a pizza.

Well, I have to say, I attended the luncheon with my wife and grandson.

The conversation reported here, never came up even once during the hour that she was there. One must better find a more reliable source for their news. I read the article from here, http://alaska-native-news.com/state_news/5091-senator-murkowski-attends-homer-s-first-annual-senator-lisa-murkowski-is-coming-to-town-luncheon.html?p=3 and it was way more accurate of the luncheon there.

I am not GOP but, I was however interested enough to attend. My only chagrin to the luncheon was the chicken was dry and Murkowski did not allot enough time for questions.

I also have the digital recording of the entire event.

I would assume that you are Alaska Native? Do you think that maybe she tempered her comments somewhat in Homer and tried to sound more independent because of where she was? Everyone knows that Homer is a liberal little enclave in this red state. She sure couldn't come out guns blazing against the affordable care act, women's rights and whatnot as easily in Homer as she could have in Wasilla, for example. Just a thought.

Why did the Native corporations throw all their support to Lisa instead of Scott McAdams? How do you see the conflict between tne Native corps and the tribes?
