Russia conducting military surveillance flight over Canada
Source: Ottawa Citizen
Russia is conducting a military monitoring mission over Canada this week, despite strained relations and a suspension of military co-operation between the two countries because of the crisis in Ukraine.
The observation flight is being conducted under the auspices of the Treaty on Open Skies, which was signed by Canada, the United States, Russia and 31 other countries in 1992. Signatories are legally permitted to collect information about each others armed forces through unarmed surveillance flights over military bases and other installations

The flights are taking place against a backdrop of increased tension between Russia and the West after Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in March.
Canada has levelled sanctions against dozens of Russian officials and companies, deployed Canadian warplanes, naval vessels and military personnel to central and eastern Europe, and suspended all military co-operation between the two countries. Quinney said Canada remains committed to supporting Ukraine in the face of unwarranted aggression from the Putin regime.

(7,650 posts)Canada's PM is the mouth that roared when it comes to warlike anti-Russian rhetoric. He does this for purely domestic political reasons, since there is a big (right-wing) Ukrainian population in Canada that supports Harper's party.
But for our reliance on US military might, Russia could demolish Canada militarily in about 12 minutes.
Nonetheless, our megaphone moralist PM shakes his fist at the commies every chance he gets. No wonder they want to do fly-overs to let him know they're listening.
