The cruise ship carrying a Texas health-care worker who may have handled lab specimens from Dallas Ebola victim Thomas Eric Duncan is headed back to the United States after Mexican authorities failed to grant permission for the ship to dock off the coast of Cozumel, according to a Carnival spokeswoman.
The Carnival Magic had been waiting off the Mexican coast since Friday morning for its scheduled port visit. Mexican authorities still hadnt given clearance by noon, so the ship continued to its home port of Galveston, Tex., where it was due back on Sunday, according to Carnival.
The health worker, a lab supervisor who has not been named, has shown no symptoms of the disease but remains on board and in voluntary isolation, according to Carnival. We greatly regret that this situation, which was completely beyond our control, precluded the ship from making its scheduled visit to Cozumel and the resulting disappointment it has caused our guests, read a statement from Carnival.
The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital employee and a partner boarded the ship Oct. 12 in Galveston before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the requirement for active monitoring, the U.S. State Department said in a statement. Although the worker is healthy, the U.S. government had said it was working with the cruise line to get the ship back to America out of an abundance of caution.

(10,952 posts)cruise ship. I have a coworker who is from Belize and he has a cousin who runs a hotel that my co-worker could hook me up with if I ever just fly to spend time in Belize. I think the big thing is not living around Belize City. There is more crime these days in a lot of places. I think that it is just best to be smart about the locations you visit or live in.
I had a chance to visit Egypt before Mubarak was forced out of office. The only time I was concerned about our safety one when we caught a taxi in Aswan and we had a crazy a** driver who decided to try to renegotiate the fare while the trip was in process. I was with 5 other people who refused to budge and the situation was quickly sprialing out of control (although I seemed to be the only one that figure that point out). I took a firm hand and had the driver pull over and everyone get out As luck had it, he pulled over right where we needed to get out anyway. What was crazy was the my fellow travelers were fighting for a rate that was less then the equivalent of $2 US which was just (in my eyes) not worth potentially risking your life. Common sense and listening to your gut instincts can go a long way to keeping a person safe. Outside of that one incident, the trip was fabulous.

(2,060 posts)but since the US entered Egypt and Mubarek fell, we will not go there. We're going to England and Ireland in April unless the one of them gets attacked too. I don't like to travel but I owe my wife one last trip. Sorry about your taxi crap. I've had that happen in Vegas numerous times. We've been told to stay away from Belize City by many people. Whatever, we have to get out of here. A sea-change is in progress and there is really not much of a chance of a restoration of the middle class. Good luck to you.

(10,952 posts)I went there I got a Britrail Pass which made it easy to travel around. I love London, Bath, and York in particular. I don't know if you will spend any time in London but London Walks does some really great 2 hour walking tours. I have done several over the years. They give you a chance to learn things about the section you are walking that you might never have heard about. One of my favorite walks was the Spys and Spymasters walk. On another walk years ago was saw Freddie Mercury's house. There is a half day Rock and Roll tour that I did via Minibus that was great because I just happened to be the only person to book it that day so I got a private tour. Now a days when I go to the UK I do my own thing because I have spent so much time of there I know my way around pretty well.

(2,060 posts)time in London too but mainly Ireland--the castles. Our travel agent is in Santa Monica and we'll show the things you posted to him. I'm meeting a ton of English people at Ye Olde King's Head British Pub in Santa Monica for the Second Anual Zombie Crawl on Halloween Night. I'll ask them about the places you recommended--if I can recognize the people and am not afraid to approach them. People in Santa Monica go all out for everything. I dressed as a Zombie Gorilla last year. This year I'm going as a Zombie Robin Hood and my daughter will be a Zombie Maid Marion. I'm sure these Zombies will have plenty advice on Zombies over some real English Food and English Draught. Most of the help is from London. This place makes the best Bangers. Thanks for all the info, Avebury. DU has all kinds of people for info all the time. Cheers. lol

(10,952 posts)any shows on the West End but if she does, research the prices ahead of time so that you will know if you are getting a decent price. Just because a vendor posts signs about offering low ticket prices does not necessarily mean that the price is a good deal.
There are lots of castles and palaces in the UK as well. Windsor Castle and Hampton Court are easy to get to on your own and Kensington Palace is right in London.
I always check out the museum websites to see if there are any good special exhibits going on. I was able to see the Lord of the Rings film exhibit the first week it opened up, a James Bond film exhibit and a Dr Who Exhibit (3 different trips). I have also caught some really neat cultural exhibits from China, Turkey and Iran. There are so many great museums in London.
When you get ready to fly out of London, make sure to have plenty of time to through security at the airport. It was really bad the last time I went.
If you or your wife have any questions I would be more than happy to try to answer them.

approximate cost is $6500.00 with the Ireland part fully guided with paid airfare. I'm checking on Groupon rates too for the Irish castles. Seem much cheaper. Again, thanks for the info. I'd love to see Windsor. I just hope I don't run into Anne Boleyn's ghost. See ya, I have some work to do.

(34,138 posts)Heck, I couldn't afford a house there. But I bought this one at a really good price in 1978 so I have a history with it. It's be hard to give up.
I was so disgusted with the system after 2000 and 2004 I was ready to leave the country. Since then I decided that my ancestors who were "founding Fathers" would want me to stay and fight for democracy here and not bail to live in another country.
Belize is a neat place, though and I wouldn't mind visiting someday!

(39,215 posts)not doubt be more dangerous for them to care for a person with ebola.
When are the people who are exposed or working with a patient where others were exposed going to set down and wait out the quarantine period? Why do they continue unnecessary travel before the period is over. They are health care workers - if they do not take this seriously then why should anyone?

Mexico fails to grant access to cruise ship carrying Texas health worker

Belizean news reports stated that the cruise ship Carnival Magic was offshore after the government of Belize learned that a U.S. hospital worker on board may have been exposed to Ebola and that the Belize Coast Guard was deployed to prevent the ship from going into port. The government of Belize assured its citizens that the health-care professional never set foot in Belize.
A Carnival spokeswoman, however, said the ship made its scheduled visit to Belize Thursday. Passengers were free to disembark there for the day other than the guest and her traveling companion who are in voluntary isolation, she said.

(102,410 posts)The posting at DailyKos is not at all reflective of current facts as the story has totally changed. If you google the story at WaPo, you will find there is an updated story there with a working link that totally conflicts with that which you have posted That is why the SOP for LBN requires a valid news source link and host consensus is that this be locked. You may re-post with valid subject line and sourcing in LBN, as long as to do so will not duplicate current threads, or you may choose to re-post in GD.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
