Military alert over 'foreign subs' off Stockholm

Source: The Local

BREAKING: Sweden's military has deployed planes and ships in the Stockholm Archipelago against what it says is a threat from foreign submarines in the Stockholm Archipelago.

Sweden’s Armed Forces say the alert is in response to "foreign underwater activity" in the Stockholm Archipelago.

Defence Minister Peter Hultqvist said he was receiving regular updates from the Armed Forces, who had informed him the operation was "necessary and well-founded".

"I have full trust in their judgement," the TT news agency quoted him as saying.

While Palme was PM, one of them even ran aground and was a major embarrassment to the Soviet government when the Swedes had to tow it free. Even Palme, who was no friend of NATO or the USA, had to go public and admit that it was the Soviets who had been spying on Swedish coastal waters, and not us, as he so clearly would have preferred to announce. We might have been doing it, too, but at least if so, none of our subs were captained by a jerk careless enough to run aground in the waters of an officially neutral nation.

Like their Norwegian and Finnish counterparts, the Swedes are well-trained, well-equipped and, if necessary, could be absolutely lethal. Although we can't say with 100% certainty that it's the Russians, the odds are astronomically high that it most likely is.

Sweden have maybe a small navel force - but it is very competent - and by the way - Sweden have also some of the best submarines around - the A26 submarine - is one of the stealthiest around - possible been beat by the U212 and 214 - who is really a stellar submarine...

The same with Finland - who have a long memory when it come to Russia - and still have the largest army in Scandinavia - mostly because of its long border with Russia - and a long memory....

Denmark and Norway also have a competent naval force - I would doubt russia want to fight them head on - specially as both of them also is member state of NATO - and therefore can get help if need arise...

I hope Putin is just playing hide and seek - to show if the other states still are at their best - for the sake of Russia I do hope they do it an it is not a part of something more dangrous....

Spying? Subs? Airplanes on alert?

What the hell? Has Sweden become a world power or something? Sounds like an elephant poking a dog with a stick (reverse analogy). What are we unaware of? Or is someone just screwing with someone else?
