Foreign Minister Julie Bishop discusses downing of MH17 with Russian president Vladimir

Source: Australian Broadcasting Company

Russian president Vladimir Putin has responded cooperatively to Australia's request for investigators to be given further access to the Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash site in eastern Ukraine, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop says.

Ms Bishop has held a 25-minute "detailed discussion" with the Russian leader on the sidelines of a summit of European and Asian leaders in Italy.

The Foreign Minister said she received assurances from Mr Putin that he would help facilitate access to the crash site for international investigators but could not confirm a timeframe in which the Russian president would act.

"I had a very detailed discussion with him. I expressed our concerns about the Malaysia Airlines crash," Ms Bishop said.

It's just incredible that Putin has gotten away with this without more severe repercussions, though the sanctions are hurting his regime pretty successfully...

Most people think that inspectors had free access to the site for long enough to pick up not only pieces of bodies but all the pieces of wreckage and get them back to labs for analysis.

That's not the case. Not at all. They barely were able to take pictures of a large portion of the area and search for bodies. They got most of the bodies and body parts, but not all. There was fairly reliable video footage of some of the plane being moved about, and of some of it being hauled away.

Scrap metal is a thriving business in the DNR and LNR. Much of it heads for the Russian border and vanishes. Not just plane bits, but armored vehicle wreckage, trashed manufacturing equipment, etc.

Since the perception is that the investigators got all they needed, there's no problem denying them access to the site. And since Putin continues to play this game of "they're completely independent" with Western acquiescence and reluctance to just call him a liar, etc., it's a hard sell. The media are afraid to create something that would destroy the blessed state of peace at all costs, even if the cost is other people.

Worse than Chamberlain. It's as though Hitler conquered much of Europe then asked for a ceasefire to "freeze" the conflict, with the exception that he'd continue to bomb London during the ceasefire. We'd be tickled pink to have achieved peace--until the genocide was publicized, but then the Holocaust deniers would probably take center stage because we'd need to believe them to feel good about ourselves.

And the amount of sheer twaddle presented on the matter is simply incredible, both in its quantity and patent idiocy.

People are claiming to be absolutely convinced, and by evidence to boot, of anything from 'shot down by two fighter planes' to 'it's the missing plane from Asia complete with bodies'. The variety and ingenuity of the various 'false flag' concoctions would be humorous, if it were not so akin to a tour of Bedlam to see the lunatics for a ha'penny....
