(Australian) Ginger teen jihadi warns 'black flag will fly over Buckingham Palace'

An Australian teenager who left his Sydney home to join ISIS has warned the extremist militants will not stop fighting until their black flag is flying over Buckingham Palace.
Seventeen-year-old Abdullah Elmir - a Muslim convert now calling himself Abu Khaled - disappeared from home earlier this year after telling his mum he was going out fishing.
But he never came back, and has now appeared fronting an Islamic State propaganda video surrounded by other fighters.
Speaking in English with a trace of an Australian accent the ginger teen directs his message to America, Britain and Australia, warning: "I say this about your coalition - you threaten us with this coalition of countries, bring every nation that you wish to us, bring every nation that you want to come and fight us."

(19,964 posts)Think it's mostly used in the UK.
JustAnotherGen
(31,823 posts)I thought that was kind of derogatory in Great Britain - maybe not so in Australia?
theHandpuppet
(19,964 posts)I've only heard the term used by UK folks and don't know if it's meant to be derogatory or just descriptive.

(2,256 posts)I am surprised by the attitude of a lot of posters here. Ive seen posters stand up for discrimination against others and rightfully so. But when it comes to redheads, many of these posters thinks it's hilarious to put them down. This kid is openly telling people that the insults bother him!
In the video, he even says he's thought about SUICIDE because of the harassment!. Why is this funny to people here? I don't understand this place sometimes......

Founder and Editor of Ginger Parrot (www.gingerparrot.co.uk), a website for redheads
In a world where red hair shades are becoming more and more popular (just look at the dye-at-home products on supermarket shelves), many flame-heads are still sensitive about being called 'ginger' as opposed to 'redhead'.
Why so touchy?
Whether they choose to embrace it or not, redheads will be called 'ginger' at some point in their lives (or lots of points in their lives, more likely).
Copper, auburn, chestnut-red, golden, strawberry blonde; it doesn't matter. They all come under the same umbrella. You are a ginger. But you are also a redhead.
While the term 'redhead' conjures thoughts of genetic mystery and glamour, 'ginger' hits a nerve and can emit a negative vibe. Society has a heavy hand to play in this. From the playground to mainstream media, our attitude towards the nickname goes back to the way 'ginger' is used and the power we allow the word to have over us.

I feel so sorry for his parents. I don't feel sorry for him, though, even though I know he's being used as a PR pawn by ISIL and he was groomed by a well known extremist who was responsible for brainwashing other teenagers in Sydney. He's just a fucking dickhead, imo...

(95,247 posts)Red hair is fairly common among the Kurds, for one. Thrace was held by the Ottomans for a long time, and slaves and soldiers taken from there for service east. Even more deeply, there was certainly early migration through the north tier of the Near East by proto-Celtic peoples. In old Egypt, red hair was a requirement for certain temple duties.

(6,241 posts)foreign country with no money or resources. Once you pass their picture and vital information to local authorities, the problem sorts itself out. Do all of this very publicly, and anyone else that's thinking about doing this can see the consequences of traveling like this.
But there is someone seriously wrong with someone that sees the torture, rape, and murders that ISIS commits and says "I want to be part of that. Those are my people." They deserve any consequences that arise from their decision.

(3,316 posts)they deserve any consequences that may arise
I'm not in favor of putting boots on the ground but if the need does arise, then we may have no choice
I don't think we can necessarily trust the Middle Eastern countries to provide soldiers because who knows if their armed forces have been infiltrated or not by ISIS.
I think history has shown us time and time again that those truly devoted to a cause will do what it takes to further that cause. I think that we could possibly see terrorist strikes here. What would have happened if those three girls decided to try and kill people here instead? Maybe no one would be hurt but even using school shootings as an example, people could be killed.

And all those people who didn't pay attention to him and "his greatness" are going to pay. Just the same mindset of any number of idiot sociopaths who set themselve up as the True Embodiment of The Word of God for power, money, and giggles.
