Obama taking action to push manufacturing

Source: AP-Excite

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is expanding his push for increased manufacturing in the United States by directing federal money toward new technologies, apprenticeship programs and competitions designed to assist small manufacturers.

The White House is announcing the executive actions Monday as part of the day's focus on manufacturing, which administration officials consider one of the bright spots of the economic recovery.

The measures would:

— Allow the Pentagon, NASA and the Energy and Agriculture departments to collectively spend $300 million to develop advanced materials and new technology for sensors and digital manufacturing.

2. Maybe the President should drop his push for the TPP and similar trade deals.

Just a thought.

If he actually wants to bolster manufacturing.

If we wait and see, it will be too late.

Every Democrat should join us in condemning new trade deals. Maybe then the President will get the message.

It isn't an attack on the President. It wouldn't hurt him to change his focus and his mind. No one is 100% right on every issue.

I'm from Ohio, I've seen what the trade deals have done to my state.

... in addition to the leaks that illuminate things included that are just downright horrible necessitates a strong and forceful opposition.

When thinking about how past trade agreements have impacted our country and in light of what we simply don't know about the TPP, I don't know how anyone could harbor a "Let's wait and see what's in it" response that guarantees its passage. That is so very dangerous, and I am personally quite upset that the D.C. elite and "our" representatives are not being transparent with us regarding this "trade agreement".

You are so right, Enthusiast. As long as "free" trade deals are in place:

Any new technologies America creates will just be copied by factories overseas. These factories will then undercut American factories.

Any new apprenticeship programs America sets up will just produce people who won't be able find work. And I'll tell you why. I'm not seeing any Help Wanted signs in my region. But I am seeing factories close down, one after another.

This whole thing reminds me of the signs the broken factory towns in my region have been putting up. "We're coming back!" "We're on the move!"

Meanwhile, every last thing in every last store is made overseas. Even US factories paying minimum wage can't compete. It's all becoming one big sad joke.

12. Because trade and trade deals kill manufacturing - unless you are Germany, Canada, Sweden, Australia

All those developed countries have manufacturing sectors that are 27% to 28% of their economies - the US' is 19%. And trade is a much, much larger part of their economies than it is in the US. Apparently trade does not kill manufacturing in developed countries.

13. If the powers that be were interested in preserving US manufacturing jobs they could do it.

I think, mostly, they are interested in destroying organized labor, high wages and a safe work environment.
