Ebola outbreak: US advises against quarantine

Source: BBC

US health officials will actively monitor health workers who have treated Ebola patients in West Africa, under new rules.

Updated guidelines issued on Monday will require most medics to be checked for symptoms for 21 days but will not require quarantine or isolation.

The UN Secretary General has condemned enforced quarantine measures.

The current Ebola outbreak in West Africa has infected more than 10,000 people and killed almost 5,000.

They seem to have a zero tolerance approach to Ebola. This might be bad for the more sensible among us.

and what medical professionals from the hot zone have been telling them: quarantine of healthy people is unnecessary and will not work because first, they'll cut down the number of medical workers overseas trying to stop this thing and they'll cause people traveling from that part of the world to the US to lie about where they've been and then be afraid to seek treatment if they start to show symptoms.

The whole thing was a stupid idea devised by panicky politicians who want to get re elected.

Kaci Hickox is a heroine. Once she threatened a big, fat lawsuit they changed their tune.

There was no "waffle". The policy was out there based on the science, and the media proceeded to distort the reality and magnify the fear factor, purely for ratings. Idiots like Christie (considering a 2016 Presidential run, Cuomo (up for re-election this year), and Quinn (up for re-election this year), decided to politicize and grand-stand for election purposes and are now facing blow-back.

The President HAS come out to indicate that the money was cut but unless liberals BUY hundreds of media outlets (TV/radio/newspapers) the message will never be heard and the pathetic cycle of ignorance displayed on places like DU, will continue.

The patient who died in Texas was initially exposed to or taken care of by dozens of family members, none of whom were infected. Of the 9 patients on U.S. soil who had contracted the disease, there has only been ONE fatality (the original Liberian man). The others (either brought over for treatment or who contracted the disease while treating the one Liberian patient) have either been released virus-free or are in treatment and stable.
