Giants Beat Royals in Game 7 to Win Title
Source: ny times
The San Francisco Giants won their third championship in five years with a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals in the deciding Game 7 of the World Series on Wednesday.
Madison Bumgarner was the star of the Series for the Giants. After allowing just one run in 16 innings in two winning starts in the Series, he turned in another outstanding performance in Game 7, this time in relief.
Pitching on just two days rest, in the unfamiliar role of reliever, Bumgarner pitched the games final five innings, giving up two hits and no runs.
The Giants loaded the bases against Jeremy Guthrie, the Royals starter, with nobody out in the second inning. Back-to-back sacrifice flies gave them a 2-0 lead.

(22,000 posts)but was checking in on the score every time I got down to the office for a break. It was about 1 o'clock here in Korea when I finished and had saw the headline. So glad they won.

(17,108 posts)Whoever won this series, the fans of both teams got their money's worth. What a series! That catch by Sandoval is priceless.
It's chaos right outside my Mission District apartment. I think I'll head on down to Mission Street and see what's happenin'.
I tip my hat to the Kansas City Royals. What a World Series!

(5,732 posts)I'm a Giants fan and I'm really happy that the Giants won. But give KC its due, they were a good ball club that ran into a one man buzz saw. Madison Bumgarner was phenomenal. But if you take him out of the rotation and look at the other starters, they were absolutely terrible. With the expectation of Bumgarner, that had to have been the worst starting rotation to ever win a World Series. Bumgarner won 3 of the games and Petit won the other. The other three combined for zero wins in 5 starts. I hope that those three starters are all gone next year, along with Homer Strickland and Kerosene Jean Machi.

(78,249 posts)which leaves MadBum in the (I believe) historic position of having two wins AND a save in a single Series.

(78,249 posts)That's two strong Southern hosses right there.
edit: and of course, Peavy is always, always good in the regular season. As George Steinbrenner once described Dave Winfield, he's "Mr. May".

(285 posts)that you are a disgruntled KC fan; I wont laugh at you .
With that said, the sports media tried to convince us all that it was a slam-dunk for KC to win the world series. In fact while the Giants battled ST Luis, I heard a commentator from ESPN assert that neither the Giant nor St Luis were even worthy enough to play KC, and that pissed me off. So excuse me for gloating over Mad Bum, and my Giants.
Best of luck to your Cinderella KC Royals next year....aah ha ha ha

(10,500 posts)For starters, I don't know why he shut down the Royals running game. If Infante had stolen 2nd, then Escobar's bunt would have moved him to third with one out and he could have tagged and scored on Aoki fly ball.
I also don't know why he didn't go to Herrera sooner in the 4th inning. In fact, if he was going to pitch Herrera for 3 innings, Davis for 2 and Holland for 2-3, then maybe he should have just started the game with them and then gone to James Shields to finish it.

(5,732 posts)I second guess Bochy all of the time. But KC was a hell of a ball club and Yost got the most out of them. They ran into a buzz saw in Bumgarner, the Giants bullpen pitched well and in last nights game, and so did KC's. The Giants made that one run lead hold up. Last night, the ball bounced the Giants way. That is baseball.

(10,500 posts)The votes are already in. They vote at the end of the regular season, before the postseason begins.
Also, just as the Giants seem to always win in even numbered years, so to does Showalter consistently win the Manager of the Year award every 10 years in years ending with the number 4. He won in 1994, he won in 2004 and he is expected to win in 2014.
Matt Williams of the Nationals is the favorite to win it in the National League. Which is kind of ironic given the bad job he did in the NLDS.

(78,249 posts)that's what happens to that stuff, which is always made for both teams so the ones for the winning team are ready to ship immediately. Don't know about the other swag.

(6,486 posts)The way the Royals finished the regular season and went thru the playoffs is plenty of reason for pride. (And that's coming from a Giants fan.) They had the misfortune of running into Madison Buzzsaw.

(78,249 posts)some dude down the block had the play-by-play cranked up so loud you could have heard it in KC that last half-inning. If Gordon had scored on the muffed hit (most observers believe Crawford would have gunned him down), I'd be posting this from jail!
