A surgeon who contracted Ebola while working in his native Sierra Leone has died while being treated in a biocontainment unit at a Nebraska hospital, the facility said Monday.

He lived in Maryland. I saw his family being interviewed over the weekend. My condolences to his family, friends, and coworkers.

I would guess the patient's basic health at the start of the illness also affects the likelihood of coming out alive after the disease has run its course.

But when they have caught it early and treated it intensively in well-appointed hospitals, their success rate has been very good in the US.
