First Gay Marriage Performed in South Carolina

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP, WLTX) - Multiple media outlets report that the first legal same-sex marriage has taken place in South Carolina.
The Charleston County probate court began issuing licenses Wednesday morning. one couple--Kristin Anderson and Kayla Bennett--got married moments afterward on the courthouse steps.
The office of Probate Judge Irvin Condon in Charleston said that he had issued six licenses in total to same-sex couples.
The judge's attorney, John Nichols, says the way was cleared for issuing the licenses by a decision in a case in Columbia. On Tuesday, the judge in that case ruled that South Carolina must recognize the marriage of a same-sex couple performed in Washington, D.C.
Last month, the South Carolina Supreme Court told probate judges not to issue any marriage licenses until there was a decision in that case. Nichols says Tuesday's ruling was that decision, so Condon is issuing licenses.

(13,869 posts)I know this resulted from events outside of SC (federal appeals court housed in VA covers SC), but I haven't heard anyone critical of the events. All of the major newspapers in the state (Greenville, Columbia and Charleston) had editorials in the last week telling the Attorney General to quit wasting tax money fighting what was obviously a losing battle on this. Some of the counties, especially in the Tea bagging northern part of the state, are still refusing to issue licenses and will not do so until forced by a direct court order, but this is wonderful to see in such a backward state as South Carolina.
