EXCLUSIVE: Rookie NYPD officer who shot Akai Gurley in Brooklyn stairwell was texting union rep

Source: NY Daily News

While Akai Gurley was dying in a darkened stairwell at a Brooklyn housing development, the cop who fired the fatal bullet was texting his union representative, sources told the Daily News.

Right after rookie cop Peter Liang discharged a single bullet that struck Gurley, 28, he and his partner Shaun Landau were incommunicado for more than six and a half minutes, sources said Thursday.

In the critical moments after the Nov. 20 shooting, the cops’ commanding officer and an emergency operator — responding to a 911 call from a neighbor and knowing the duo was in the area — tried to reach them in vain, sources said.

“That’s showing negligence,” said a law enforcement source of the pair’s decision to text their union rep before making a radio call for help.

Sickening but not surprising. Thought for you victim? No. Thought for keeping your own butt out of trouble after you kill someone for no good reason? Yes.

obviously he should do his job first. Most unions tell members to contact the union if there is a chance of reprimand or firing or a contract violation. Usually there is a window of time to contact the union, but having a representative present for interviews or consultation is typical.

The union simply helps insure due process (a fair hearing or legal counsel). It's clearly bad judgment to be texting while the incident is still on-going.

Which is why he was more concerned about his job and "due process."

Of course, a prosecutor in a grand jury wouldn't emphasize this "urgency" he took.

maybe the text would be evidence. It seems weird that they wouldn't call EMS, etc. before texting for counsel. Maybe they knew that they had violated police policies and were already aware they were in trouble.

They will likely say something like they called for help but their radio didn't work or something. Typical lie that's impossible to disprove.

It seems clear that the grand jury process isn't working (at least in some places).

that called 911 for help when the police stopped them because the (Black male) passenger (allegedly) did not have his seal belt on ... during the call, the woman said they were afraid to get out of the car because how aggressive the police were acting. She, then, provided a verbal narration to the video her son was taking, as the police at the scene broke out the passenger window, tased and drug the passenger out of the vehicle (tasing him again).

I wonder what happened/is happening in this case? The Eric Garner case shows that video (with a clear recording of the victim) clearly is not enough ... maybe a video with contemporaneous narration is enough?

Just trying to understand the rules here.

... the one with a newborn infant in an infant seat in the back, and a 9-10 year old boy (son) who recorded the whole thing from the back seat. They were on the way to the hospital to visit the woman's mother I think. Where did that happen? Indiana?

In the Akai Gurley case, are you saying you don't know the particulars of the case? Run over to http://www.DemocracyNow.org and watch or read the transcript. Amy had a great informative hour this morning with guests who discussed what happened with Akai Gurley. Happened a couple weeks ago while Ferguson was getting the world ready for the release of the no indictment of Wilson.

It's true, and should be required viewing for all busybodies who call the cops on anything that moves on the sidewalk in front of their house.

Me? I stay as far away from them SOBs as I can. And I've taught my kids the same. I sort of have a deal with cops: They don't call on me and I don't call on them.

Cops are like antibiotics: stay away from them, and when you're on your death bed, they might do you some good.

Merry Christmas.

Sometimes that clashes with civil society, and what's good for society. SOPA/PIPA comes to mind, where media unions wanted to be able to regulate the internet.

The end of the article says that the stairwell was dark and he probably didn't know that he had shot someone.

===
When Liang and Landau finally resurfaced on the radio, they reported an accidental discharge, added the source. Authorities have said they didn’t immediately know anyone was struck with the bullet.

The stairwell was pitch-black because the lights were out. The superintendent had asked NYCHA to fix the lights months before the fatal encounter. The problem was finally resolved hours after Gurley died.
