Tea partiers shouted obscene, racist chants on Wednesday while gathered outside of the White House to protest President Obama's executive actions on immigration.

Right Wing Watch reported that among the shouts, captured on video by one of the activists, protestors could be heard calling for the hanging of Obama.

"Hang the lying Kenyan traitor!" one protester could be heard saying in the video.

"Plenty of trees in the front yard," another said. "Wouldn't be the first one hung on one of them trees."

My parents were Republicans, voted for Nixon. But when President Kennedy was killed, I remember my parents' reaction. My mother, in particular, was devastated. She didn't vote for him, but he was the president of the United States and, as such, belonged to all of us. It's been there since we became a nation and our courts construe it strictly. As the other reply to your post said, we here believe that it's better to let the idiots come out in the open and make fools of themselves than to drive them underground. So far, it's worked.

Here's something that I witnessed back in the late '70s in downtown Chicago. I was finishing up some work on Sunday that I should have finished on Friday--goofed off. There was some sort of rally going on at Federal Plaza, which I could see from my office. It kept getting louder and louder, and finally I had to give up working because it was so loud that I couldn't think. There were 5-7,000 people there just shrieking and about 50 cops. I couldn't make out what the protesters were saying. Then a step van, a station wagon and a couple of cars pull up. Out jumped about 30 Illinois Nazis. They put up a podium and a sound system. One of them got up to speak, and of course, I couldn't make out what he was saying. The crowd surged forward, but the cops were doing a good job of keeping things under control. The Nazi idiot spoke for about 10 minutes, then all of a sudden, the Nazis grabbed their equipment, ran for their vehicles and sped out. The crowd cheered louder than anything I had heard, and soon broke up and headed home. The next day I asked one of the older people at the office what had happened. He said that police let the crazies speak for 10-15 minutes, then one of the cops tells one of the crazies' organizers that the cops can no longer guarantee the crazies' safety. That's the signal to depart. The Nazis don't get many converts, and they are frequently shown what low regard the public has for them. It's a little chaotic, but people on both sides get to speak their minds. It works for us, and I can't imagine and can't recall any effort to amend our Constitution to do away with free speech.

Our system may be unique, as you say, and not just among similar nations. It would be hard for many US citizens to see countries with restrictions on speech as being free, but I don't see it that way. Each country has to figure out what works.
