Sony pulls release of 'The Interview'
Source: CNN
Sony on Wednesday said it would cancel next week's planned release of "The Interview," after most of the country's largest theater chains had decided not to show it.
The decision by Sony (SNE) follows a threat on Tuesday from anonymous hackers that people should avoid going to theaters where "The Interview" is playing.
"In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film "The Interview," we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release," Sony said in its first statement on the matter.
"Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. ... We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie. ... We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."

Interesting idea...let's see if ever-loving greed keeps them from giving the movie away for free.

(22,000 posts)The whole situation is made more complicated by the fact that Sony is a Japanese company. I'm wondering if maybe Sony could sell the movie which has already been made to another studio that could release it. All Sony really would want is to recoup the costs most likely. Or maybe they get a set amount of money that is less, plus a percentage from box office release and DVD sales.

(13,297 posts)and it will be 'accidentally' pre-released everywhere online -- and they'll pretend to go after these hackers... but will decide to let the movie get out there via YouTube, etc and simply blame hackers for it getting out there
Then in a year, release the DVD/Blu with 'previously un-released and shocking material' and get all of their money back.

(2,682 posts)(not a genre in which I'm interested), I deplore the capitulation to terrorism. Once the hacker invoked 9/11, it wasn't surprising that movie chains dropped the movie. It seems that it doesn't take an actual ACT of terrorism but merely the THREAT of terrorism for the bad guys to achieve their goals. Reminds me of a Star Trek episode where people lined up to commit suicide because they believed the enemy would actually attack, destroy their cities and infrastructure unless a certain number of people died periodically. Once Capt. Kirk called their bluff, no attacks actually happened.

(47,479 posts)You can hack computer system from anywhere in the world.
But you have to be physically present in the movie theater to terrorize the audience. So why cave in? Why not post security agents in each theater? Will be cheaper than to cancel the show.
