Dozens Arrested at Milwaukee Protest Over Death of Dontre Hamilton
Dozens of protesters were arrested Friday after causing a three-mile traffic jam by blocking a Wisconsin freeway over the fatal shooting of a black man by a white police officer earlier this year, police said. Officials said 74 people were arrested after protesters stopped traffic on the I-43 in downtown Milwaukee at about 5:15 p.m.
The demonstration follows the death of Dontre Hamilton, 31, who was shot 14 times by a police officer during a confrontation at Red Arrow Park in Milwaukee on April 30, according to NBC station WTMJ. District Attorney John Chisholm this week said the decision on whether to charge Officer Christopher Manney, who was fired from the Milwaukee Police Department, would come by the end of the year. Manney fatally shot Hamilton after responding to a call by workers at a nearby Starbucks complaining of Hamilton sleeping in the park, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. Hamilton's family said he had a history of mental illness, according to WTMJ. .....

(7,263 posts)Report: Israeli model underlies militarization of U.S. police
The extreme militarization of American police forces has been brought to public attention by the tactics employed against Occupy protesters, which often appear more appropriate to counter-terrorism operations than to the control of non-violent protest. According to investigative journalist Max Blumenthal, however, the proper term for this ruthless suppression of dissent should be Israelification.
In an article which begins with examples of American police training alongside Israeli security forces, Blumenthal writes, Having been schooled in Israeli tactics perfected during a 63 year experience of controlling, dispossessing, and occupying an indigenous population, local police forces have adapted them to monitor Muslim and immigrant neighborhoods in US cities. Meanwhile, former Israeli military officers have been hired to spearhead security operations at American airports and suburban shopping malls, leading to a wave of disturbing incidents of racial profiling, intimidation, and FBI interrogations of innocent, unsuspecting people.

US Police Get Anti-Terror Training in Israel on Privately Funded Trips
But there has been another, little-discussed change in the training of American police since the 9/11 attacks: At least 300 high-ranking sheriffs and police from agencies large and small from New York and Maine to Orange County and Oakland, California have traveled to Israel for privately funded seminars in what is described as counter-terrorism techniques.
For some, dispatching American police to train in a foreign country battered by decades of war, terror attacks and strife highlights how dramatically U.S. law enforcement has changed in the 13 years since al-Qaida airplane hijackers crashed into New Yorks World Trade Center. In many places, the image of the friendly cop on the beat has been replaced by intimidating, fully armed military-style troops. And Israel has played part in that transition.
As these trips to Israel became more commonplace, the militarization of U.S. law enforcement also was driven by the creation of various homeland security initiatives and billions of dollars of surplus military-grade equipment donated to local departments through the 1033 program after 9/11.

(3,577 posts)As I recall the news when this first happened, a Starbucks worker called police because it was company policy if they felt uncomfortable about such a situation. Two officers came and talked to Mr. Hamilton and determined he was not a problem. (Yesterday's newspaper said they checked on him twice, which I hadn't heard before.) The officer who killed him was responding to a voice mail about Mr. Hamilton, according to reports. Without knowing the identity of that caller, I'd hold off on blaming Starbucks. I should think the first officers would have spoken to the Starbucks staff about their conclusion and they would not have felt the need to call police again. (One of the workers came out immediately after the shooting with much eye-witness information about the whole situation that clearly showed the officer was in the wrong. )
