Leaked Emails: Sony Chief Wants Idris Elba As 007 (1st black James Bond)

Source: The International Business Times

British actor Idris Elba may have to get used to ordering his Martinis shaken, not stirred, after an email leaked in the Sony hack suggested that a top executive wants him to be the next James Bond. In an email dated Jan. 4, 2014 Amy Pascal, chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment's motion pictures group, wrote to Elizabeth Cantillon, former executive vice president of production for Columbia Pictures, which distributes the Bond films, simply saying: “Idris should be the next bond,” according to a report from The Daily Beast.

There has been speculation for some time that Elba, 42, was a possible replacement when the current Bond, Daniel Craig, departs the franchise. A Facebook group called "We Want Idris Elba For James Bond" has 30,000 members. Craig is currently filming “Spectre,” his fourth screen outing as the iconic British spy. He is contracted to appear in one more Bond film after “Spectre,” according to The Guardian.

Elba made his name in gritty HBO drama “The Wire,” and has gone on to appear in a number of high-profile Hollywood movies, including “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom,” and “Pacific Rim.” He has also previously expressed a desire to take up the role. In an AMA question-and-answer session, he told a poster who asked if he would accept the role: “Yes, if it was offered to me, absolutely.”

Elba would be the seventh actor to play the celebrated spy on the big screen, and the first black man to take the role. The Bond movie franchise, which began in 1962, is one of the most successful in cinema history, bested only, in terms of box office receipts, by the Marvel Universe and Harry Potter films.

But Isis' name has been mentioned as a Bond replacement long before this crap happened. Still it's a good idea to use this as a 'ladder'.

I just suspect that, with all that's recently been said, her conversation with a PR hack went something like "hell, how can they call me racist? That's not me at all" "Well, have you praised any black actors recently to other executives recently?" "Damn, yeah, I said Elba would be a good Bond - that's got to be in the leaked emails somewhere ..." "I'll alert the media ...".

Fassbender is amazing in a role where you don't even see his face, and he's not the bad guy. Never took much notice of him before "Frank" but that performance makes me agree with Scott. One critic called it a "master class" in acting.

Don't care why.

Don't care that it's a mea culpa!

He can also be the first mute Bond - because he's like Redord, Grant, Poiter, Newman - stop talking. Just stand there and look pretty!

they'd have to tally who would bring in the $$ Only two in here are still maybe 004 and for sure 005 only name on here I have no idea who he is . is um Idris.

Jason Stantham (sp) I still think is best for the role but eh we'll see. I wasn't exactly pro Daniel Craig at first but he proved me wrong in Quantum of Solace. Casino Royale was a bit of a joke. except the scratch my balls joke. Frankly think it'd be easier to right in a Female James Bond easier. put Katee Sackoff in there. oh the uproar on that haha...

And as slowly as they make these things a lot of these actors would be getting a bit old for the role by the time they get around to making the film.

I'd guess a guy like Chris Hemsworth could play the part at that time and maybe even Fassbender. I don't see Hardy in the role at all.

If they go with a female "Jane" Bond character...well...I've got one choice:

Kate Beckinsale
