NORTH ASHLAND, N.H. Approximately 35 cars were involved in a crash Friday morning on Interstate 93 in North Ashland that injured nine people, one of them critically, New Hampshire State Police said.
A sudden snow squall hit the area and limited visibility on the highway. Drivers called the conditions blizzard-like.
Manchester District Fire Chief Al Poulin, who drove through the squall, said that there were many vehicles on the road driving in excess of the 75 mph speed limit, including some apparently heading to ski resorts for the weekend.
Conditions were clear and then suddenly, "We slowed right down to nothing," he said. "We couldn't even see where we were going, that's how much of a whiteout condition existed at the time."

(111,261 posts)If the weather hadn't cleared for the return trip, I'd have spent a lot of money I didn't have to stay at a chichi ski lodge where the gig was.
They don't call 'em the White Mountains for nothing.
Driven that stretch countless times and it's tricky. Essentially a wind tunnel with no safe verge or medium. Further, it's pretty much micro climates here -- perfectly nice in one valley, white hell in the next.
Surprising that kind of accident doesn't happen more often.
