WHAT A REPUBLICAN SENATE MEANS FOR WORLD POLITICS
The first, and most obvious, consequence is that the three committees with the most direct oversight into the conduct of US foreign policy will be chaired by Republicans:
the Armed Services Committee is likely to be headed by its current ranking member, Oklahoma senator Jim Inhofe or, possibly, John McCain, the Arizona senator and the 2008 Republican presidential nominee;
the Select Committee on Intelligence, very likely to be headed by North Carolina senator Richard Burr, who is expected to keep a much tighter lid on matters related to the Central Intelligence Agency and other intelligence issues, including the use of torture during the Bush era, ongoing surveillance programs and the legal underpinnings of unmanned aircraft throughout the world;
and the Foreign Relations Committee, likely headed by Bob Corker (pictured above), a Tennessee senator with a conservative pedigree who is nevertheless known for his willingness to work with Democrats.
