According to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, the activists staged a meeting calling for peace and formation of cultural autonomy within Ukraine

ODESSA, April 17. /TASS/. Police in Odessa, a port city on the Black Sea, on Thursday arrested 30 more activists of the People’s Rada of Bessarabia, including member of the presidium of this public organization Vera Shevchenko. According to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry, the activists staged a meeting calling for peace and formation of cultural autonomy within Ukraine.

They also protested against the arrests of their fellow activists, among them the organization’s leader Dmitry Zatuliveter. "He disappeared immediately after the rada’s foundation conference that was held on April 6. We are very much concerned about Dmitry’s health and life, we are totally against the use of unauthorized methods of influence with regard to him, including force and, possibly, psychotropic agents," Shevchenko told reporters. Zatuliveter’s relatives and friends believe that he may be held by Ukrainian law enforcers, she added.

According to local media, the organization’s members detained by police were subjected to lengthy interrogations and intimidations by Ukraine’s Security Service officers.

Bessarabia is a region in south-eastern Europe between the Black Sea and the Danube, the Dniester and the Prut rivers. The Odessa region bordering the unrecognized Transdniestria Republic occupies part of Bessarabia.

Oh, that old wound is opening again.... As Bessesarbia was taken from Romania, in the 1940 insisted when Stalin and Hitler had been in agreement of how to solve border disputes in the eastern Europe countries - and where Bessesarbia who until Stalin looked upon it - and found it attractive, and strategic - desied he wanted it - and forced Romania to give it to Stalin... Even if the people living there, had seen them self as Romanians for centuries...

And the Transdniestria Republic - is supported by Russia - even if not recognized by anyone - it is still supported by Russia - and have important parts of the 14th army stationed on its premises - and Odessa have been the sights of many Russians for years now - as it is an important harbor for Ukraine - I would not be surprised if the 14th Army was ordered to "defend" the russians living in Odessa against Ukrainians who, in a pretext would be violating their rights to "self-determination" and maybe even cut of Odessa from the rest of Ukraine - as other parts of Ukraine have been cut off from the rest of the country - Ukraine doesn't have to many ports to the Black Sea anymore - not after Putin's annexing of the Crime and the eastern part of Ukraine - and now Odessa is in the cross air too...

as to their predicament in Ukraine.

Have you been to Odessa? I am very familiar with it. Odessa is somewhat similar to Crimea in attitude and makeup.

The difference between Odessa and Crimea was that Ukraine came down hard on Odessa first with the massacre (it is evident the massacre was at the least encouraged, if not orchestrated, who was behind it is yet to be seen, possibly the Oligard Kolimnosky, because he had organized and sent 3000 Right Sector Militants to travel there and promoted the "football Hooligans" to travel to the game there) and then with subsequent activies like allowing Right Sector to have night marches to "remind" the population of the consequences of acting out.

Have you seen this documentary? It is a long watch but it managed to put together all the videos (that were originally published on a Odessa media site but later taken down) and made a chronology of events.

Sadly I have never been to Odessa - but I have been reading rather intensive about this parts of the world - not just the last 70-80 year - but about the area a few centuries past - So I think I have a little knowledge about the area - even if I have a few holes in my knowledge about it all - and is always interested in getting to know more.

But I do know that the far right have made an imp ass into Odessa - and many other parts of the western part of Ukraine - and they have been doing a lot of horrible crimes in their wake - as ordinary police have either looked the other way when crimes have been committed - or outright supported it - or in most cases, out manned and outgunned - and had no other choice than to keep it in the back - as the Right Sector militants do what they do - and at best - is there to keep up the rubble when the dust settle....

And I do know - that Odessa have many violent gangs of soccer hooligans - who is feared all over Ukraine - not to say the neighborhood - even if both Romania and Hungary - not to say Russia itself have its share of soccer hooligans, who is more like criminal gangs than soccer supporters - and is often used by local leaders - like Oligarchs who want to impose their will on the rest - and is using this thugs as their private army in many cases... That be against people who they competitor with in business - or people who they want to leave a area - property to be bought cheap and thousands of others reasons.....

And the Far right Sector is indeed a army - whose activity is also to scare people who is "out of line" into the right thinkings about everything - and many of the members of Right Sector have the same attitude as the groups who had a field day under World War Two - when they attacked russians - and many other minorities at will - at the gest of the germans.. Even if at current the Right Sector are not attaching minorities at the same level as under World War two - rumors, and histories of what members of Right Sector is able to do - with the tacit support of the ukraine government - both on local and national level is rather scary.... And I would not be surprised if the Right Sector - if they was not kept under some form of control - or was to be confronted on a national level - would do horrible crimes against humanity - before defeated - as Ukraine have been going from having been a Democracy in most of the form - to be all other things than a democracy who should be supported by other democratizes.. Specially as the far right - in the form of Right Sector - and many other groups - really have getting into the halls of power - where they wield almost unrepresented power and is using it to make Far right even more powerfully than it allready...

The Right Sector - even have better equipment than the Ukraine national army - and they have an battalion who is heavy into the war in eastern Ukraine - who do most of the figthing against Russian suported ressistance fighter - and who when they got prisoners - treat them badly - sometimes outright kill them - other times beat the daylight out of them - there and then - or later in "prisons" where they are to answer about everything - and nothing.... And the Right Sector is also not over themself enriching themself with little kidnappnings where sivilians are arrested under bogus claims - and then, if their loved ones want them back - have to pay a randsom - and that often happend to minorities - like the ukrainian jews - who have lived there for centuries - maybe as long as 1000 years - Odessa was until WW2 a center of ukraine jewery - and even if most of them who lived there before the war - was killed by the germans - and their supporters in Ukraine - some survived, and was able to travel home again - and rebuild the life they once had - even if most of the community was destroyed when the war was over... Today Odessa have a triving community of jews in Odessa - and have had it for allmoust 70 years - but many who once could never dream of leaving the city - are now packing their belongings for other places - out of fear about what the Right Sector is able to do - if they wanted to do it... It is not that long time ago - when pepole was killed in the streets - for being a jew in Odessa...

I suspect Odessa is in for a difficult road in the future - and even if the City have survived it all to now - Im not sure if the rich culture who once was present in Odessa vil survive this time around... To many things is going wrong - and to many is medling in the Ukraine crisis as it is - and not all do it, with the whole picture in mind... I suspect, specially NATO is in for a shock - when the help they are giving the Ukraine National Army - that be in knowlegde about modern warfare - equipment - or handweapons - end up in hands who should not be any near weapons, or have axcess to weapons more dangrous than a fork and a knife.. As I dosen't think the government in Kiev play with A honest hand at all.... But that is just my 5 cent on the subject...
