Blunt take on Confederate statues

The task force report on Confederate statues at the University of Texas at Austin offers a good template on how other entities might proceed. But its unsentimental look at history, in short supply in this Confederate symbols debate generally, is particularly admirable.

The report, to UT President Gregory Fenves, led to the university deciding to move a Jefferson Davis statue to a campus museum ...

The report notes that George Littlefield, a Confederate veteran, and university regent and benefactor, commissioned the work that resulted in six statues in the university mall, four of them honoring Confederate leaders ...

Littlefield’s stated aim was to remember “these grand patriots who gave up their lives for the cause of liberty and self government.” This included the “liberty” to own slaves, according to the historical record ...
