Despite growing up in a house where we all went to church until we were old enough to make up our own minds about it (lasted until I was about 7 or 8, I think - maybe a little older), and having a mother who teaches sunday school, a lot of Christian references are lost on me

I really am surprised to the extent that Christian mythology (definitely not ideology though) permeates America. For me, it's Star Wars - that's what I was really brought up on. Some bible quote? I won't get it. "These aren't the droids you're looking for," on the other hand, has a lot of meaning. "TK-421, do you copy?"

Republicans give the "Jesus handwave", and their supporters are all:
"You seen that new VT-16?"
"Yeah. Some of the other guys were telling me about it. They say it's…it's quite a thing to see—"

that the Roman soldiers guarding the execution site cast lots (played primitive dice) over Jesus's robes because he sure didn't need them any more and well, cloth was cloth. It's an illustration of heartlessness, gambling to see who would win the property of a dying man while that man watched.

claim Jesus's mantle for themselves--i.e., wrap themselves in his robes--when in truth they are intensely hostile to everything that he is supposed to have stood for.

and occasionally uses the same acid ink that Mr. Fish uses.

This is one of his best.

He's one of my favorite cartoonists. He always puts a whole scholarly volume into one illustration, whether I agree with him or not.

and now they cast lots to see who will own the robe of Conscience; a facade that will hide their inner evil.

Beware of wolves in sheep's clothing, they are the Anti-Conscience.
