Detroit automakers race to keep up with sales

... Three years after the GOPers raged about Obama keeping the U.S. auto industry from dieing (Ford said if GM went bust, auto suppliers which Ford relies on would go out of business making Ford's survival problematical) business is booming for the Detroit automakers. Detroit auto makers hired 38,000 workers last year. More hiring is planned for this year. I think I hear the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments in GOP salons.

Repunks should note that these are people who are actually producing something of economic value - not trading in worthless Bundled Mortgages, or gambling with Credit Default Swaps (as did Wall Street's, seven-eight figure salaried, bankers).

Detroit automakers race to keep up with sales

DETROIT (AP) — Auto sales are growing so fast that Detroit can barely keep up.

Three years after the U.S. auto industry nearly collapsed, sales of cars and trucks are surging. Sales could exceed 14 million this year, above last year's 12.8 million.

The result: Carmakers are adding shifts and hiring thousands of workers around the country. Carmakers and parts companies added more than 38,000 jobs last year, reaching a total of 717,000. And automakers have announced plans to add another 13,000 this year, mostly on night shifts.

Still, the surge in hiring bolsters the argument of those who supported the federal bailout of General Motors and Chrysler in 2008. The bailout has been a major issue in the days leading up the Michigan Republican Party primary this Tuesday. GOP front runner Mitt Romney opposed the bailout, which was supported by then-President George W. Bush and later by President Barack Obama.

G.O.P. Senators Oppose Auto Bailout - NYT (AP) Nov 2008

Senators Richard Shelby of Alabama and Jon Kyl of Arizona said it would be a mistake to use any of the Wall Street rescue money to prop up the automakers. They said an auto bailout would only postpone the industry’s demise.

“Companies fail every day and others take their place. I think this is a road we should not go down,” said Mr. Shelby, the senior Republican on the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

Mr. Kyl, the Senate’s second-ranking Republican, added, “Just giving them $25 billion doesn’t change anything. It just puts off for six months or so the day of reckoning.”

Note to Sen. Shelby (R-Ala), Kyl and GOP in general: FUCK..YOU.

Patent Board: GM Is No. 1 Innovator
In today’s highly competitive auto industry, the race to develop tomorrow’s technologies is a vital one—and it’s also one that GM is winning: According to The Patent Board—an independent third-party group that helps companies get the most out of their intellectual property—General Motors led the industry in U.S. patents received for all four quarters of 2011. The final tally? GM was granted 1,123 patents last year in areas including product engineering, powertrain engineering, and research and development.
