End of Republican Party? Party Of Nixon/Reagan/Bushes Staring Down Its Own Demographic Extinction

The End of the Republican Party?

Jonathan Chait: "The modern GOP -- the party of Nixon, Reagan, and both Bushes -- is staring down its own demographic extinction. Right-wing warnings of impending tyranny express, in hyperbolic form, well-grounded dread: that conservative America will soon come to be dominated, in a semi-permanent fashion, by an ascendant Democratic coalition hostile to its outlook and interests. And this impending doom has colored the party's frantic, fearful response to the Obama presidency."

The Republican Party, and its associates, are better funded, better organized, and more bold than the Democratic Party. They are aware of the demographic challenges they face, and they are taking steps to retain power even as their percentage of the population shrinks. The voter suppression programs have been intensifying every cycle, and I expect this one to be far worse than anything from recent history. The DOJ has been responding to some of these programs, but the Republicans are likely to succeed in preventing large numbers of people from voting. Southern states typically have large minority populations, sometimes even minority-majority populations, yet these are dominated by Republicans. Also, the Republican message doesn't need to change much at all to appeal to Hispanics, as noted by the author. Republicans do quite well with Latino voters in Texas, despite railing against illegal immigration. They make token efforts to show respect to Mexican culture, and that's enough for many.

I live in California, and there ARE many Latinos who vote GOP simply for cultural & religious reasons. Now, I KNOW that California doesn't have anything to worry about, but there are other less than sure states for Obama where the Latino vote is critical. How any member of any minority could vote for those reptiles is beyond me--seriously.
