by Robert Reich, Of the many issues not discussed in the presidential campaign,
the most shameful is the growing number of homeless children in America. There are twice as many now as before the recession, reaching a record national total of over 1.36 million (a million more, if you include children who were homeless at some point last year).
Many sleep in cars. Some, in overcrowded shelters. Others are on the street or under bridges. They arent eating well or getting medical care. They dont get adequate sleep. Many are in danger of violence. They attend school only sporadically.
We are the richest nation in the world, richer than any nation has been in the history of the world. Yet of 33 advanced nations, we have the highest rate of child poverty -- 3 times the rate of Denmark or Norway, a rate even higher than in Russia.
So why are we allowing this to occur? Because children dont vote? Because many (but by no means all) are children of color? Because poverty is something we no longer talk much about? Yet they are our nations children, and they are part of Americas future.'

Don't tell me anyone is surprised about the outcome of these policies.
You can't discuss them without discussing how low wages have fallen. This is the crime that has been committed against their grandparents, their parents, and now the current crop of homeless children.
