Obama: 'I placed my bet on the American worker' a bet that's paying off ... for America

http://www.freep.com/article/20120228/NEWS15/120228026/President-Barack-Obama-UAW-speech

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama delivered a rousing, combative speech Tuesday to UAW members, chastising his would-be Republican rivals for opposing a government intervention he said helped save the American auto industry and promising to battle on to protect the rights of workers.

READ: See the full transcript of the speech here.

“I placed my bet on the American worker,” Obama said, referring to the government’s investment in General Motors and Chrysler in 2009. “And now, three years later … that bet is paying off. Not just paying off for you, it’s paying off for America.”

Obama, without mentioning anyone by name, noted Republican candidate Mitt Romney’s column in the New York Times in November 2008 headlined "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt." And he pointedly said that while some - including Romney - suggested private financing and a managed bankruptcy could have saved the companies, that there was no such financing available and everyone knows it.

“More than one million Americans across the country would have lost their jobs in the middle of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression,” he said.

When did the President do the bailout? If I remember correctly it was right after he took office. How big of a gamble was it? Oh we all know it was big! the right screamed bloody murder over it (Government Motors!1! Let Detroit Go Bankrupt!) and they had many people whipped up against it.

It was a huge gamble with taxpayer money and President Obama took the chance. That took a huge amount of courage. To say otherwise is unfair and dishonest.

and wall street got way bailed out too. If they had really used that cash to create mfg. jobs as the President intended the recession would be ending sooner. Repugnicans did all they could to stifle that. Making this president look bad is their one and only priority.
