The Electoral College Meets Monday. Heres What to Expect.
'On Monday, 538 people will meet to determine who will be the next president.
These meetings of the Electoral College, convened in every state and the District of Columbia just shy of six weeks after Election Day, have long been little more than a formality.
But the victory of President-elect Donald J. Trump, who lost the popular vote but is projected to win the most electoral votes, has thrust the Electoral College into the spotlight once more. The conclusion of American intelligence agencies that Russia tried to intervene in the election to harm Hillary Clintons campaign has only intensified the focus in recent days.
President Obama on Friday described the Electoral College originally a compromise between those who wanted Congress to choose the president and those who favored a popular vote as a vestige. As electors gather in state capitols across the country, here is a rundown of what comes next.'>>>

And poor Mr. Biden has to do the job.
'On Friday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m., members of the House and Senate will meet in the House chamber to count those votes. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr., as the departing president of the Senate, is expected to preside over the count, during which every states vote is opened and announced in alphabetical order.
Mr. Biden will then declare the winner based on who has the majority of votes at least 270. (That has led, three times, to an awkward moment when the sitting vice president has announced his own defeat, according to the House historians office. That happened most recently in 2001, to Al Gore.)'
OK, gotta get outta here!

" Since the Electoral College members each vote separately for the President and the Vice President, couldnt they vote for Clinton for President and Trump for Vice President? Republicans who swore an oath to vote for their party would then have fulfilled their oath while saving the country from the disaster of a rump presidency. They will have balanced the leadership of our country while putting in office a person who actually CARES about the people of our country! This may really be the answer to our crisis!"

(36,309 posts)in which case the whole thing would be tossed to the House for a vote. House members could only vote for the top 3 candidates from the EC. So imagine ... The Repugs get tRump and an alternative, like Rmoney. The Teabaggers will want tRump, but many Repugs will see their lives and careers will be much better without him, and vote for the alternative. If enough Repugs split the vote, Dems could give HRC more votes than tRump, and the WH is hers.

(216 posts)As I recall, the law regarding contingent elections requires that to be declared the winner the candidate must receive the vote of 26 states, an absolute majority.
If no candidates receives the necessary 26 votes the House keeps voting until a candidate gets 26.
