March 10 and 11 - Tisch Climate Action Conference NYU - Senator Bernie Sanders via teleconference

Two day conference is designed to facilitate multi-disciplinary conversations with environmental leaders and participants in order to develop concrete strategies for dealing with climate change. Speakers include Standing Rock’s Phyllis Young, environmentalist Bill McKibben, economist Jeffrey Sachs, scientist Michael Oppenheimer, former US General Wesley Clark, artist Marina Zurkow, and Senator Bernie Sanders via teleconference.

A groundbreaking public conference centered on climate change – bringing together environmental leaders such as writer Bill McKibben, former general Wesley Clark, economist Jeffrey Sachs, Standing Rock activist Phyllis Young, and artist Marina Zurkow – will take place March 10-11 at New York University, organized by the NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ Initiative for Creative Research (TCR). The first of its kind Climate Action Conference, held in cooperation with the Hip Hop Caucus and the Justice Action Mobilization Network, will gather leaders, artists, thinkers, and activists to take on the challenge of how to respond to climate change in today’s political climate.

Spearheaded by filmmaker Harry Winer (Damaged Care), a visiting professor at NYU Tisch, Chair of the NYU Environmental Studies Department Dale Jamieson, and TCR Director Dana Whitco, the conference will bring together over 30 speakers and panelists for two full days of programming, including Senator Bernie Sanders via teleconference. Capping off the event will be an evening performance on Saturday, March 11 at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts. “We at Tisch believe that artists and scholars have an important civic responsibility as storytellers and truth-seekers, as well as an enormous capacity to effect positive change, so it is my great honor to host this groundbreaking conference,” said Allyson Green, Dean of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. “The Climate Action Conference puts artists, academic researchers, and activists in the same room – and on equal footing – in order to better facilitate the dissemination of vital information about the state of our planet and how we can better protect it in the face of climate change.”

The conference will take place Friday, March 10, 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturday, March 11, 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m., with various sessions alternating between two locations - the NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, located at 566 LaGuardia Place, and at the NYU Stern School of Business at 44 West 4th Street. The conference will culminate in a musical performance at the Skirball Center for the Performing Arts from 7- 9 p.m. entitled "Can't drink oil. Keep it in the soil!” featuring Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas, Broadway star Antonique Smith, jazz musician and composer Irvin Mayfield Jr., among others.
