The next time you’re complaining about being tired or overtaxed, consider the challenges of Luther Yonger—a 98-year-old Upstate New York man who walks 6 miles each way daily to visit his wife in the hospital.

Yonger makes the trek to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y., each day to visit Waverlee, his wife of 50 years who is paralyzed and has battled brain cancer since 2009, Spectrum News Rochester reports.

“I ain’t nothin’ without my wife,” Yonger, fighting back tears, told Spectrum. “It’s been a rough pull. It’s been tough. I can’t stand to see her up there like that.”

Waverlee has been hospitalized two weeks, forcing her husband to make the long trek along I-390—a highway—to visit her, Spectrum reports.

7. I guess in that case, it's his choice. I would hope he has other options if he doesn't feel well,

bad weather, etc. Surely, folks in town -- a church or something -- help in those events.

Anyway, thanks for the info. Should have looked a little closer.

8. He's got to feel a little tired, after 98 years, one would think!

All that time, walking 3 miles to the hospital, 3 miles back is truly a hard job.

I wish someone locally would help him. He has to be so exhausted every day.

Probably doesn't want to ask anything of anyone and feel indebted.

I would think good neighbors would be so happy to make things easier for him, and find a way to keep him from feeling he's a burden.

For The Sake Of True Love: Meet The 98-Year-Old Man Who Walks Miles To Be Alongside Hospitalized Wife
By Susan Johnes | August 20, 2018

Conventional wisdom suggests that the only genuine love in humanity is ‘true love.’ Luther Yonger is a perfect depiction…

In the last two weeks, this Korean World War II veteran has made it his routine to wake up at dawn and begin his 12 miles trek to visit hospitalized wife because “I ain’t nothing without my wife, Waverlee, of 50 years.”

Waverlee is paralyzed and has battled brain cancer since 2009.

“It’s been a rough pull. It’s been tough. I can’t stand to see her up there like that,” emotional Yonger told Spectrum News.
