Could Libertarian candidate tip the Senate race to either Cruz or O'Rourke?
WASHINGTON -- By now, most Texas voters have heard of Republican Sen. Ted Cruz and his challenger, Democratic Rep. Beto ORourke. Theres another candidate on the ballot, Neal Dikeman -- a political novice who isnt running to win and has raised just $13,500 for his campaign.
The venture capitalist from Houston is the Libertarian nominee. And if the race is close enough, the number of votes he pulls in could tip the contest for the Republican incumbent or his Democratic challenger.
We have a horse race, Dikeman said. For the first time, Libertarians are going to have an impact. Dikeman says hes not running to be a spoiler. But with polls showing a dead heat or close to it between Cruz and ORourke, thats a possibility.
Many Libertarians also support liberalizing drug laws -- as does ORourke. And Dikeman has been hammering on a message that Congress has been ineffective, which could entice voters who are mad at Cruz, President Donald Trump, Washington or all the above. [His message] sounds suspiciously like an ORourke rally, said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston.
