Bernie Sanders Uses Rebuttal To Fact-Check Trump's State Of The Union Speech

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) delivered a rebuttal to President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday with a 30-minute speech that meticulously picked apart what Trump got wrong and the things he felt the president had failed to mention. “I hate to say this, but not everything Donald Trump said tonight was true or accurate,” Sanders said at the top of his speech after offering his congratulations to Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams, who delivered the Democratic rebuttal.

In his response, Sanders noted that Trump did not mention climate change, Medicare, voter suppression or Social Security ― issues that the senator said all Americans, not just Trump’s “billionaire friends,” face. “For many of President Trump’s billionaire friends, the truth is, they have never, ever had it so good,” he said. “But for the middle class and the working families of our country, the truth is that the economy is not so great.”

Sanders pointed out that Trump did not mention in detail the challenges facing “ordinary Americans,” including health care costs, low wages and unaffordable rent.

“Trump said tonight, ‘We are born free, and we will stay free.’ Well, I say to President Trump: People are not truly free when they can’t afford to go to the doctor when they are sick. They are not truly free when they cannot afford to buy the prescription drugs they so desperately need. People are not truly free when they are exhausted because they are working longer and longer hours for lower wages.

“People are not truly free when they cannot afford a decent place in which to live. People certainly are not free when they cannot afford to feed their families.”

I come from the UK. I live in NZ. both of those these have "socialist" healthcare. A few months ago I spent a week in hospital:

I didn't need to be there. My "co-pay" was a pack of smokes and a lotto ticket.

Imagine what your hospital would charge for an MRI:

I bought a lotto ticket to fill in the time. I didn't win. MRI cost me $2.

6. Meyer London was another socialist in Congress and influenced the New Deal

Meyer London, a Socialist Jew, was a politician who not only ran for Congress, but his economic proposals were advanced for his time, and they later were encompassed in Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal platform.

When Congressman Meyer London died in 1926, half a million New Yorkers attended his funeral. “For six hours,” the New York Times reported, “the Lower East Side put aside its duties, pressing or trivial, to do honor to its dead prophet.” Although a politician, London was so respected for his learning–even by his political opponents–that he was buried in the Writer’s Lane section of Mount Carmel cemetery, near the grave of Sholom Aleichem and other Jewish cultural heroes. London’s working-class instincts and intellectual acumen made him advocate for social legislation that later formed the heart of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal platform.

London immediately sponsored bills which Congress defeated, yet later became integral elements of the New Deal program: minimum wage, unemployment insurance and increased taxes on the wealthy. He fought for then-radical ideals such as anti-lynching laws, higher immigration quotas, and paid maternity leave. Prescient in his own day, London’s economic proposals became right for the 1930’s and 40’s, and his civil rights proposals became law in the 1960’s.

FDR's 4 freedoms speech:

9. I love his passion, no one talks about income inequality like Bernie.

The man knows his facts and statistics.

He did a good job conveying that Congress and President are not passing economic initiatives that the majority of Americans are in favor of.

11. Bernie was Great

Hello one and all, this is my first post! I'm a huge fan of Bernie Sanders, though I've been in the Democratic Party since 1972, the year I turned 18. I can get a bit edgy with my comments some time, especially in defense of my views, so I hope I don't get kicked off this forum too quickly. I've been a loyal Democrat my whole voting life, but saw in Bernie some fresh points of views--points of views that too many of our party leaders had seemingly forgotten.

Anyhow, to the subject, whereas Stacey Abrams gave a nice emotional response, Bernie filled in the gaps with his challenges to Trump's facts! His most effective comments IMO were his poll numbers that showed even GOPer rank and file supporting many of his "socialist" issues. I think Bernie has a good chance to win our nomination this time, though the MSM has already tried to disregard him.
