Chris Christie Calls Americans Couch Potatoes

Personally, I hate when writers take cheap shots at New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s weight, because, well, it’s cheap. There is so much more to criticize him for. But when he accuses the rest of America of being couch potatoes? Come on Christie! Think before you speak. Okay. I’ll refrain. There is plenty to address on his words alone.

In a speech to a group that is frighteningly and unironically called, the Bush Institute Conference on Taxes and Economic Growth, Christie said that he had “never seen a less optimistic time in my lifetime.”

“I think it’s really simple. It’s because government’s now telling them ‘stop dreaming, stop striving, we’ll take care of you.’ We’re turning into a paternalistic entitlement society,” Christie explained.

“That will not just bankrupt us financially, it will bankrupt us morally because when the American people no longer believe that this a place where only their willingness to work hard and to act with honor and integrity and ingenuity determines their success in life then we’ll have a bunch of people sittin’ on a couch waiting for their next government check.”

Here are some of my favorite exercises!

Begin by holding up one finger for as long as you can!

If that's a bit too challenging at first, begin by just lifting that finger as far as seems comfortable. Push it up with your thumb if need be!

Strengthen the fingers one by one: soon you'll be lifting three!

As motivation -- look! I can lift four!

14. Get off the couch!

Few people outside of New Jersey know that insurance giant Prudential recently applied and was initially granted a quarter of a billion dollar grant from the state in the form of tax breaks. the program under which they applied was designed to entice out of state business into NJ and to create new jobs in various cities along the urban corridor. Prudential is not eligible for the tax break but paid off lobbyists and legislators to bully it through. With the 100 new jobs Prudential promises to create, that's costing the state $2.5 million per job, absolutely absurd! Christie now has one last chance to veto this corporate welfare which is raising the ire of democrats and republicans alike. If Christie doesn't get up off the couch and stop Prudential, he can not only kiss away presidential aspirations but his future in New Jersey as well.
