Trump Voters Wanted to Blow up the System. Well, Here We Go.
None of this is surprising, just as there was nothing even remotely unexpected about President Trumps Oval Office address on Wednesday night. The goal was to reassure a nation staring down a global pandemic and awash in conflicting information. Trump, true to type, did nothing of the kind. Dryly plowing through some words that his son-in-law and Stephen Miller reportedly put into a teleprompter for him, Trump still managed to get key facts wrong about his own governments response, thereby sowing the very panic and lack of clarity the address was meant to allay. Late into the night on Wednesday, the Department of Homeland Security was sending out clarifying statements on what Trump meant to say when he announced his ban on all cargo and passenger flights coming from Europe. In fact, what he was supposed to say was that the United States was banning non-U.S. residents from a select list of European countries but that cargo would continue coming and going as before. Trumps decision was apparently made without consulting with Americas European allies, who were blindsided and, predictably, infuriated by the unilateral declaration. Panicked Americans surged into European airports on Thursday, paying as much as $20,000 for a last-minute flight home.
There was little in Trumps address about increasing the availability of Covid-19 tests, about providing crucial help to hospitals to keep them from being overrun and strained as they have been in Italy, and the little he said about helping patients afford the emergency care and testing they might need as a result of the pandemic was not quite right either. The health insurance industry wasnt consulted or warned of Trumps pronouncements, and had to issue its own late-night comments clarifying that, contrary to Trumps diktat, only copays for testing, not treatment, would be suspended.

(205 posts)There are so many in that crowd who just do not give a shit -full stop. This hasn't really sunk in for the rest of us... It needs to so we can stop wasting anything on getting them to come around. For those who are capable, they will on their own.

(2,244 posts)"Some 63 million Americans voted for a man who wanted to smash the system to smithereens, either because they felt it wasnt doing enough for them or because breaking glass just feels so primitively satisfying. Or maybe it's because the Republican Party has been peddling a dystopian anarchistic anti-government pipe dream to them for the last four decades."
This guy literally said before the election that he was voting for Trump to "see what happens" - he was positively salivating at the idea of Trump turning everything on its head. He saw no downside. He's still out there, still saying the same stuff, still thinking Trump's cleaning house and acting presidential, which blows. my. mind.
One of my siblings hung up on me yesterday because she'd said Trump was doing the best he could to address the pandemic, I said what I thought of Trump and Trump's abilities in clear biological language and that was the end of that. After all he's said, all he's done or not done in the last 3 years and she hasn't budged. In fact, I think his base are more dug in than ever.
We'll have a cure for coronavirus before we have a cure for the cult of Trump.

(13,582 posts)I'm willing to bet that was what they came up with and it was the plan to halt all travel and cargo from Europe. Trump probably only insisted on the UK exemption for his own benefit. After they caught hell, they revised their plan.

(9,426 posts)very expensive tour of daddy's golf courses in the UK planned. It will bring in cash for the tRumps, since everyone will stay at tRump hotels, eat at the courses and pay exorbitant fees. Since Eric's wife is being paid by the tRump re-election committee, they are fighting to keep daddy in office. Donald Jenius tRump Jr.'s girlfriend is also being paid by the same committee. Strange how the tRump males gravitate to women who demand payment for their company, isn't it? Probably in their genes, after all great grandad was a pimp and brothel owner.

(5,392 posts)The Anarchist theorem says, that if you break it all down, something better will grow out of the rubble, spontaneously.
The truth is, nothing grows in the rubble.
The Republican voters have had three plus years to realize Trump was good at destroying and distorting, but waiting for the spontaneous rebirth of the Nation got boring because it just wasn't happening.
Now they want to vote for others to clean up the mess. Life pre-Trump wasn't so bad after all.

(3,557 posts)When a partys fundamental belief is that government is inherently inept, what do you expect would happen?
They vote in people who plan to dismantle as much of the government as possible and then, when something like a pandemic rolls around, government is incapable of reacting effectively. To them, this is just more proof that government is inept when that is not the reality of the ineptitude.

They could put together orders based on the 25th Amendment in an afternoon, and have Trump in a padded room by nightfall.
