Monica Lewinsky Is God's Gift to Twitter
Lewinsky, who has been a quiet force on Twitter since 2014, is recently rocking the sphere, claiming her voice in a very public forum after having been very publicly vilifiedalbeit before the age of social media. On Twitter, Lewinsky is a kind neighbor and saucy best friend. She dishes on challah recipes. She polls the Twitter abyss on what car she should get: So very me. Cant decide between a Subaru or a Tesla. (It prompted a reply from Elon Musk saying that hed be happy to give her one, and that she could return it if she wasnt happy with it.) Shes a girls girl. Who knew? The social media platform provides a glimpse into a person who had been rendered as a flat surface for decades by the media. I lived as a one-dimensional, mutated character for a very long time but I love that people connect to me on social media through these kinds of things, she tells Vogue over the phone. And when people connect for other reasons, it quiets those instances.
Lewinsky seems Twitter-seasoned and breezy: Her banner image reads Grateful AF. in slate blue font on a millennial pink background. A segment of her bio reads ex-beret model, a reference to an infamous of picture of the young Lewinsky beaming and posing with former President Bill Clinton where she was wearing, yes, a beret. She has just shy of 1 million followers.
But her foray into social media wasnt an easy one. She says that she was terrified about the prospect of joining the platform. It wasnt until she spoke about the effects of bullying at a 30 Under 30 conference in 2014 that Forbes chief content officer Randall Lane convinced her to register. He said Listen, you cant take up this crusade around online shaming, and online bullying, and these things, if youre not really in the conversation and youre just sort of chiming in from the sidelines, she says. And he suggested that I publicly join Twitter.

I really admire this woman; she went through hell and came out on the other side in a positive, impactful way.

(32,017 posts)As did Bill Clinton, and I havent forgiven either of them.
That said, its good that both have made significant, positive contributions post-2000.

(7,447 posts)it would have been someone else. She was just the last one. Bill would have picked someone else, and behaved just as recklessly, timing would have just been slightly different.

And you are absolutely correct in that she and Bill did tremendous damage to our party and liberal politics. Their actions also affected both Gore's and Hillary's candidacies for President. Remember that Gore could have easily won in 2000, avoiding the Florida debacle entirely, had he allowed Clinton to campaign for him as Clinton wished to.
But he didn't. and I blame that decision primarily on his running mater, the turncoat traitor Joe Lieberman.
But the worst culprits were Newt Gingrich and his crazies. And, to me, they always will be.
That's the bottom line.

(36,909 posts)She has moved on, probably with a shitload of therapy. Oh, but no, she needs to be regretful and beating herself up for the rest of her life?
Good lawd.

(5,463 posts)Sex in the office between consenting adults is more common than you think. Even in the Oval Office.
(It's a thrill thing.)
I thought at the time it was all a beat-up, still do.
Worse things have happened in that Office. Wars have been started, countries demolished, plots hatched. (Trump reference)

It's about her.
And she holds no more admiration for what role she played than he does.
She fking knew what she was doing & gave no fks about who she was damaging
Just server her own gratifying thrill at the moment.
She's owed nothing.

(15,374 posts)Yes, Clinton should have known better and bears most of it. There is no question whatsoever about that.
But Hillary forgave him and he seems to have reformed since then after treatment for sex addiction. But his actions enabled Newt and his crazies to do their worst. Those actions hurt Gore's candidacy in 2000 and ALSO hurt Hillary's in 2016, in part because they mitigated the effect of tRump's sexual assaults.
BUT Monica was NOT merely a "starry-eyed intern." She had already had a five-year affair with one of her married high-school teachers before heading to DC. There were also reports from her contemporaries and colleagues that she had set her sights on Clinton once she became an intern.
Her mother seems to have had grand sexual aspirations, so Monica's own aspirations didn't just come out of nowhere.
Her biggest mistake was in trusting Linda Tripp. Even then, Monica only testified because she was forced to by RW GOPers.
I admire her for trying to hold out for as long as she could, given their intimidation tactics, which should have been deemed to be illegal. After all, the actions were consensual and she was over 21 at the time.
This should NEVER have been an impeachment issue, but for Clinton's lying about it. Even that should NOT have risen to the level of impeachment. But we're talking about GOPers, for whom no action by a Dem is off the table. The same or worse actions by GOPers, e.g., Newt himself and tRump, are practically qualifications for a GOPer.
But no, I do not consider her an admirable person. And I never will. But I wish her well nonetheless.
Earthshine2
(4,044 posts)Yes, it's not fair that the GOP gets away with these things and famous Dems cannot.
But, it does not negate that this is a shame because Bill was so shameless!
It very much contributed to the GOP's rise after Gore.
As a married man who has had affairs, I can truly say this was due to profound lack of character on my part. I am much better now.
