Barrett disclosed her legal work for the group, which she undertook while employed at a law firm in Washington, in the Senate questionnaire she submitted during her 2017 confirmation process to join the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit. The work did not come up in her confirmation hearing.

Barrett wrote that she was one of five lawyers on a team that represented the National Council of Resistance of Iran and its U.S. representative office from 2000 to 2001 in their petition to review the State Department’s foreign-terrorist-organization designation.

It is pretty complicated. They clearly were terrorists - against the US - at one point. However, some saw them as a lesser evil than the government of Iran. During the Obama years, many were in a refugee camp in Iraq and they feared the Iranian and Iraqi governments. Even into the Obama years, they were considered to be terrorists - so, her work in the pre 9/11 world clearly failed. The designation was dropped in 2009 by the EU and in 2012 by the US. The US facilitated the move of thousands of MEK from Iraq to Albania working with the UN.

Bolton and others clearly see them as people who could replace the Iranian government.
