Shaming? Absolution? Jail? How to treat those complicit in Trump's wrongdoing

By MICHAEL HILTZIK

Among the glories of democratic government, the historian Jill Lepore wrote recently, are that after an election “the loser concedes without violence, and the winner accepts without vengeance.”

Lepore was right in her observation, but wrong in assessing its current implications for the U.S. She was arguing against a reckoning of Trump administration wrongdoing that takes the form of either a South Africa-style “truth and reconciliation commission” or criminal prosecutions.

Either option would inevitably become an instrument of partisanship, Lepore argues. She approvingly quotes Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden as warning that criminal prosecutions of Trump officials would be “probably not very ... good for democracy.”

“In the trade-off between prosecution and stability, Biden chooses stability,” Lepore writes. “Much of the left does not.” Her conclusion: Let history judge.

Criminal activities should be pursued to the full extent of the law.

tRump exacts vengeance. The rule that held for 220 years was trashed by tRump. I say use the legal system where there was illegality .

This is not the first time the Repubs have pulled this shit. They got away with it last time and will do it again if it doesn’t cost them. We need to make sure it does. I’m fine with Biden playing Mr. Nice Guy as long as he lets Kamala and Pelosi burn them to the ground.

No mercy for those who stripped the land and allowed millions to get sick and hundreds of thousands to die.

None whatever.

My father's unit helped liberate one of the concentration camps in Germany and everyone I ever met at the reunions said the same thing: No Mercy for the murderers.

As Pelosi has said "You mistake them for someone who cares".

Mercy will not teach them to care. It didn't post-Shrub. IMO one of the major missteps of Obama's was not to drive the GOP appointed moles out of government and not to investigate the Neo-Cons and their no-bid contractor friends.

They expect us to play graciously and not to hold them up for judgement. They are playing us for fools as they do that.

I have no doubt that 5 minutes after Biden is declared winner they will be yapping and yowling for the defeat of his policies and the failure of the new Congress.

There are 2 ways to beat a bully: One is to publicly out him for his crimes and abuses. The other is to kick him until he stops getting back up. I have seen both methods used with equal effect. In the case of those who do not learn from the first you may be required to apply the second.

IMHO we do not have the time left to save our country, our culture, or our planet to spare for re-educating the Cultists.
In this situation I am reminded of a phrase from my youth: "America, Love it or Leave it." The irony is intended.

Those of you who can stomach it are welcome to try mercy. I am not by inclination nor action a vengeful person. However I have no mercy left to offer after the damage done to me and mine, to my little corners of the world, and to those I have worked so hard to help.

I have not lost so much as some, nor am I suffering as some are now and will continue to. On the other hand I and my family are trapped in near poverty by the assholes you would forgive. I have seen first hand their callous and vengeful judgement in action, their enormous greed and the real damage they have done to the earth.
I cannot offer them the chance to do it one more time nor will I ever forget. Not in my lifetime and Never Again.
