Hillary Clinton Calls for Abolishing Electoral College After Casting Electoral Vote for Biden

Hillary Clinton Calls for Abolishing Electoral College After Casting Electoral Vote for Biden
Brittany Bernstein 51 mins ago

Hillary Clinton once again called for the dissolution of the Electoral College on Monday, shortly after casting New York’s first electoral vote for President-elect Joe Biden.

“I believe we should abolish the Electoral College and select our president by the winner of the popular vote, same as every other office,” Clinton wrote in a tweet. “But while it still exists, I was proud to cast my vote in New York for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.”

Clinton, along with her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, was part of the state’s 29 electors to cast a vote for Biden Monday as electors in every state and the District of Columbia met to formalize Biden’s election win.

Clinton was bested by Trump in the 2016 election in Electoral College votes, with 232 votes to Trump’s 306, even though she won the popular vote by nearly 3 million.

Since her loss, a number of Democrats have called for abolishing the Electoral College voting system in favor of a national popular vote.

However, Clinton has called for the undoing of the electoral vote process since 2000, when George W. Bush beat Al Gore in the presidential election, though Gore won the popular vote.

But doubt I'll see it's end in my lifetime.

On Edit:

I agree with everyone who says, "easier said than done"!, or "how do you think that's going to happen?".

But we need to keep hammering on it, maybe one day, after I'm long gone, it will happen. Dems have won the popular vote in the past 7 out of 8 elections counting the Biden victory.

Except it won't happen.

To abolish the Electoral College would require a Constitutional Amendment. Those are REALLY hard to get enacted because the process is complex and requires a high degree of national unity. Since the EC favors less populous states (which are mostly red states), they will not give up their electoral advantages easily. (A voter in Wyoming, say, has more influence on an election than a voter in California due to the massive difference in each state's population.)

Both the EC and the makeup of the Senate were political compromises made during the founding of our country. It will be very difficult to make these kind of systemic changes.

Sadly.

what shithole and his minions are doing is unpatriotic and it will continue unless something is done. The republican party no longer represent (If they ever) any since of a "free" society nor democracy. It has been for years, my way or the highway.

Just like the second amendment.
No militia is capable of standing up to a tyrannical government, with their right to bear arms.
Our military has guided missiles, how can a militia counter that technology?

Yes. Easy for Hillary or for anyone to say but Constitution authors have messed it up big. They never saw the crazies of Trump GOP. Although they should have.

Now. MSNBC Chris Hayes does talk about some solutions. Statehood for DC to help with the Senate discrepancy. If Wyoming has 2 senators, so could DC. This is the most doable option. Not easy but doable. Puerto Rico statehood was the second option. Be aware that this is not a guarantee of anything but it will make it more fair. I am not sure if Puerto Rico Hispanics won't become another future GOP base.

Other solution was Nebraska and Maine type of electors. Again, this may become an issue in California.

Nothing can change unless we Democrats vote in lower tier elections as if our life depends on it. Decisions are made there. Unfortunately we don't show up except for Presidential contests. Bernie and AOC can say what they want. They do not help in purple states during off year elections with their messaging.

It’s undemocratic and robs the majority of Americans of their voting choice, and creates minority rule. In most democracies, the most votes win. Thanks to the Electoral College, that’s not the case in America and it robs the true winner, as it has twice in recent history. It may be legal but it’s still a robbery.

It would require ratification by 3/4 of the states however. Not sure if we could get that many.
