Obama's wedded to wrong black leaders
Sometimes, but not often enough, President Barack Obama does the right thing despite very real and persistent political risk.
After Vice President Joe Biden and several Cabinet members embarrassed him by giving their honest opinions about the rights of gays and lesbians to marry, Mr. Obama publicly embraced a position that everyone knew he already subscribed to but was too intimidated by domestic realpolitik to admit: He also supports marriage equality.
Within hours of the announcement, Mr. Obama was called a flip-flopper, a cynic and a civil rights maverick. "Obama declares war on traditional marriage" screamed one conservative website headline, while the always irascible Rush Limbaugh snorted that pink smoke could be seen rising from the White House chimney.
