America urgently needs a real investigation of the Trump regime -- or it will all happen again
During Donald Trump's time in office (and arguably beyond), he and the Republican Party inflicted many deep wounds on American democracy and the rule of law. President Biden and the Democrats have done an admirable job of slowing the bleeding. But for the victim's life to be saved, the weapons must be seized, and the wounds treated and healed. For that to happen the full truth of the Trump regime's crimes must be publicly revealed.
Unfortunately, such an outcome appears unlikely. In the most recent example of organized forgetting by a country that would rather look away from the truth than confront it, we learned last week that under Trump the Department of Justice obtained the phone records of reporters who were investigating the Trump-Russia collusion scandal. Then we immediately stopped talking about it.
At Politico, Josh Gerstein reports:
The Justice Department obtained call records for the phones of three Washington Post reporters last year in an apparent bid to discover the sources for a 2017 story detailing a sensitive aspect of the federal investigation into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia, the newspaper said Friday.

(955 posts)We're over 4 months out and no one of consequence has faced a consequence. I wish I could say that shocks me, but I don't think I can. I'd held out hope that after the 6th, congressional Dems would be more like Churchill, but was afraid the far more likely outcome was that they'd be more Chamberlain, and its looking increasingly like the latter.

Get real media! The simple truth is we have an entire political party that was and is complicit in trying to pull a permanent coup d'etat. And they still are! The Rs are not just doing this to regain power.
How do you explain their instant amnesia after the Capitol assault (an assault that frightened them so much they condemned it and it's leader in it's immediate aftermath)? Why did they do that? Just to save their jobs? Just to keep their base voters loyal to them in their next election?
I don't think so. I think it runs far deeper than that:
(1) Far too many of them were directly complicit in the attempt to upend and ultimately overturn the 2020 election results via fraudulent, illegal activities starting on November 7 and leading to and including the Capitol assault itself.
Every one of those far too many are at risk of being charged with serious crimes and potentially losing their personal freedom. Does anyone really believe they would just sit on the sidelines hoping that a Biden DOJ would rather turn the page, move forward not look back, and not pursue them? They have too much at risk.
(2) This isn't their first attempt. In fact, their first attempt actually succeeded in 2016.
Too many of them can be implicated in deliberate foreign interference of that election. What they are doing now is directly related to their involvement in Russia's interference. Collusion with a foreign government to rig the 2016 election results in their favor. How many of them were "agents" of a foreign government along with the former one? How many were compromised? The acts and behavior exhibited by Rs in Congress today directly result from the illicit and illegal activities they were party to in the 2016 election. The big lie, the fealty to Trump, has all been to cover their asses; ultimately, to keep themselves out of jail.
That's what I think. It's all connected and it's as corrupt and illegal as it gets.
