What is ISIS-K? Islamic State terror group believed to have carried out Kabul attacks that killed 12
WASHINGTON Days before the attacks at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan that killed a dozen U.S. troops, Biden administration officials had warned of threats posed by ISIS-K, a terrorist group that is a sworn enemy of the Taliban.
On Thursday, U.S. officials said they believe ISIS-K carried out the bombing and gun attacks at the capital's Hamid Karzai International Airport and they view the group as a continuing threat.
It would be difficult to overestimate the number of unusual challenges and competing demands that our forces on the ground faced the threat to our forces, particularly from ISIS K is very real as we have seen today, said Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, commander of U.S. Central Command.
ISIS-K is an offshoot of the Islamic State terrorist organization that established a sprawling caliphate in Iraq and Syria. The group was all but destroyed by a U.S.-led campaign but affiliates have since emerged and drawn recruits from other local and regional militant groups.
